Oil Cap keeps popping off when

The problems for me this year have been endless with this 6 year old machine...

The oil cap on the kholer engine keeps popping off and no longer locks shut... can anyone recomend a fix?

Also as of yesterday we are getting no hot water.. looks like there is no suction coming from the vaccuum solinoid to lift mechanism which allows heat into the exchanger.. gears arent stuck. Could it be the solnoid switch?

Or, i noticed the engine was running funky the other day and changed the oil... it ran out like it was mixed with water... we had just changed it last month which was strange. Could this be a bigger issue? Maybe somehoe water is mixing with the oil?

Sounds like gas mixing with oil. Running way to rich but prob something else if it was so bad you notiiced. What motor do you have?

Interesting. The engine is a KOHLER AEGIS Engine LH 630-775 Liquid Cooled 28 hp

Evan sounds like a more serious issue to me. Does the engine run ok now? Lack of vacuum and high pressure in the crankcase leading to the oil cap getting blown off could be bad piston rings. I'd need some more info on the symptoms but you could do a quick engine compression test and that might help you identify a problem.

The engine seems to run alright... my dad is worried it might be that as well. How do i run a compression test? Would i have to take it to a small engine guy?

Also recently.. we had pump seals replaced as they were leaky and noticed some hairline cracks in the ceramics of the pump so i ordered new ones and will have them replaced soon.

Another problem I had this week is that the heat exchanger doesnt seem to work so we don't get hot water.... i notice that we arent getting suction out of the skinny tubes which activate the exchanger..

Shes a mess right now.. takin her in monday though.. hopefully my guy can get that hot water back... ive been using portables all week and i'm over it.

Ok. I did a little research and it sounds like you have a breather system issue. It could be a cracked breather tube that runs from the crack case to the carb or there maybe a reed valve or some type of valve in the breather system that has failed. This would cause both the oil in the crank case and the low vacuum that is supposed to operate the diverted valve in the HX. Koehler has had trouble with the breather tubes cracking.

One more question. When you changed the oil, was it milky looking or just really thin looking?

It was dark and fairly thin.. maybe a little milky.. and we had just changed the oil about 3 weeks prior and only put about 10-15 hours on the machine

Yep. Sounds like gas in oil. Water in oil is milky. Pull the dip stick and smell it. It will have a strong gas smell. Sounds like you caught it early. If it is a breather problem then it is a simple fix and you have just saved yourself big time.

Update..

I had my engine looked at by a machine specialist. He says it runs fine.. will replace the oil and fuel covers and temperarely fixed the oil cap on with some wiring.

I was playkng around with the hx today.. still no vaccumm to pull the gears.. but suction is strong and high functioning elsewhere.

I manually pushed the gears open and noticed water would get hot in the tank... still not hot enough though! Tomorrow in the am i am taking it to my truckmount guy .

compression test ?
leak down test ?

adjusted the carb?

checked the breather for possible carbon obstruction or cracks?

be careful. temp fix on the oil cap can ruin your engine. when excess of compression in the chamber, it escapes trough the oil cap or breather wich is not good but safe.

when you put pressure on the cap and the compression can't escape, it will go down into the engine and the only way is by blowing your rings. At least the compression ring.

If you did not see what he did, I would ask or get a second opinion.

If the fresh water tank is getting hot then you need to replace the little plug by the 1 gallon water tank.

The oil cap problem: you need to order a new cover that includes the oil cap as the cover is stripped. This is a kohler engineering defect. . Older kohlers never had this problem.

As far as the heat exchange diverter not working, 1 of 2 problems. 1st is you have a break in the lines or they are not fitting tight on top of the diverters. 2. Or your solinods are not working any more. Take 1 of and put connect / test it with car battery to see if they are opening.
