I use TT all of the time and my prices are higher than just about everyone on TT. The trick is to do outstanding work and get 5 star reviews. I never loose money with TT. You need reviews though.

Ever use Thumbtack to help grow your business? Anybody used them before?

We used Thumbtack with good results in the beginning. But then it just got flooded with price shoppers in our area. For some reason Thumbtack wouldn't let us target the high end zipcodes, so we cancelled with them. I think it is a good tool to have in your marketing toolbox... But it also depends on your service area... Don't make thumbtack your only marketing tool either...

I don't think it's worth it... They charge 4 dollars just send out a quote. It's a 50/50 you'll get a response from the quote.

I'm a bit late to this thread but I've used thumbtack as a buyer a bunch of times and always have a good experience. I also ask the companies about how they like Thumbtack and most of them have good things to say. The real trick is sending out an estimate as fast as possible (usually you can send something that is templates with ballpark prices) and include some good links that build credibility about your business (to make them comfortable hiring you). The volume is usually pretty good depending on the area and most of the time the businesses you'll be competing with aren't going to respond fast.
