Leather on back of persian rugs

I was asked today if I could sew on leather strips on the back of some rugs. Keeps them from curling? i have seen them and it doesn't look too hard - anybody done this? i have heavy duty needles.

I have never done it but have it done to a few rugs. It helps but is far from a cure all. The sewing is just basting type stitch. Pretty simple.

We often take the "leather" which is usually vinyl off of rugs. it's next to impossible clean under the straps and it's a great place for moths to hide

You would mostly see this on new Iranian carpets. It is the sign of a very tightly woven carpet or rug another words eye candy. You will need to do this with a waxed lining thread (most carpet supply stores carry this in a olive green color.) This stuff is like steel and should be sewn with a zig-zag pattern. It is not hard as you would go through the top and back up exposing the thread on the floor side or back of carpet and straight up through the pile again repeat. You would charge for this by the hour with a minimum of 2 hours plus cost. You can do this! Keep me posted I will assist.

I agree but the customers can be very attached and feel they must have this! Moths do prefer the edges and ends.
