So im trying a handful of targeted marketing approaches where i come up with a thesis of a good target, an approach to engage the target and then follow up / track. Purpose is three fold:

1) get exposure for my company (get the name out there)
2) figure out which campaigns are effective
3) get the phone to ring/get work

Theres another thread where im trying emails/letters for commercial work -( i need to update )

Heres my next idea - targeted for residential customers (two fold)

First target: - new home owners

- theres the tried and true referral source of realtor relationships which are great but they take time to develop and you do not have access to the home owner until they refer you.

What about new home sale records? I imagine there are public records that could be searched - my idea is to look for such records and send a "welcome package" that consists of a fridge magnet and offer for free scotchguard with any cleaning in the next 6 mos.

Should i up the ante? A free room? Send 8oz of spotter? Anyone try this approach?

2nd idea - targeting anyone with pets. How? Veternarian offices and pet stores. Dog shetlers and breeders. Maybe offer free office cleanings if the vet will let me putbout flyers/cards/cleaning offers?

Donation to dog shelter if they agree to provide care package to anyone that adopts - bag with fridge magnet, 8oz of spotter, coupons and some dog biscuits?

Pet stores - just ask if they have a bulletin board where i can post offers?

Thoughts?

EDDM is probably the best media for what you're wanting to do. You can target specific high-end areas and mail to them for as little as 15.75 cents per home. You'd mail a BIG postcard.

Yes, a special offer is recommended. A free room like you mentioned or a flat $50 gift certificate toward their first cleaning.

You can buy mailing lists of new homeowners. Infousa.com is what I've used in the past.

I like your thinking,
The pet ideas are great, look into your local rescue often times they will have specials for the people that house their dog/cats until they are adopted. Or even those who adopt a pet.

Your idea of the new homes may be a bit too late, it is my sense that most people will clean the carpet before they move in, if they are going to clean at all. I could be wrong however. Try getting the list and marketing 1 year later, with the explanation that carpet should be cleaned yearly.

Keep thinking outside of the box, I like it.

Sounds great, like the idea of being laser targeted with you efforts. Means you can create a compelling and specific message, exactly to your potential customers problems.

Although I agree with onfire, if they've just brought a house, chances are high that their carpets were cleaned before it was put up for sale.

Also, great idea with targeting anyone with pets. If you do go down the route of donating to a dog shelter, try and get a link to your website as well. Great way to build up the number of links to your site, especially if it's from a local company, which will be highly valued.

I tried to hook up with a lot of local charities. not a single one would give me a backlink to my website or even a post on their social media about us partnering together. I was offering a % of my profits and an up front donation. I'm not sure why this is.... anyway, I'm sure there are some out there that will, I just got frustrated and quit trying to give my money away :p

Good idea re: linking to my website. One thing ive learned, people love their dogs more than they love people!

For pet stores, here's what's worked GREAT for us. We drop off a stack of Pet Stain Removal Tips brochure. We put them in a nice brochure holder (sold at office depot for around $5). We tell them we want to help their clients know how to take care of pet stain issues.

We stop by periodically with more brochures and goody bags with pre-packaged cookies for the employees.

Doing this gets new clients from employees and their clients who inevitably have pet problems.

On this page you can see an example of the pet stain brochure: http://www.hitmanadvertising.com/TMFcleaningbrochures.html

John, LOVE the brochure . . . .

I sent emails to two local shelters re: 10% contributions from people that adopt/rescue/foster pets and contribute to them and hire us. will post updates as they come (including doing more of what i suggested above)

good ideas! Its a balance of figuring out how much you really are willing to pay for a client. for example if you mail out spotter bottles and get even a 5% response that has cost you probably $140 per client. look at how much you are willing to pay for a client and that might eliminate a few ideas.
