I have cleaned some 1970 orange shag and it still looks pretty good other that how ugly it is. Actually it was pretty clean as well. Old lady used her home shampooer several times a year.

I'm sure you've seen that Kermit the frog green carpet from the 60-70's?

No way, depends on carpeting... sometimes older carpets do far much better than newer ones :sneaky:

Buying the right fiber makes a big difference. Polyester carpet will show signs of wear pretty quickly (a year or two). I have also seen some pretty old nylon carpet that's probably as old or older then I am that still looks really good (though dated style wise).
Also, define professional. There are those of us who know what we are doing and there are others who can only be considered "professional" in the sense that they are being paid to do it. Any new trainee is instantly a "professional" the second he is hired but he won't have a clue. That comes only with proper training and experience. What he can give you without those is "subpar results".
"Rippling" is often due to installation issues. Same problem, there is a published standard but was it followed?

Man if you do the math. It would cost you roughly 1500.00 just to pad one room. Never mind the carpet lol. According to them a roll of pad will run you 675 - 1620.00 just for one single roll of pad off the shelf

Still happens. Every winter when humidity is low. We roll the carpets out and you can feel the field building up around you. I can hold my knife 2 Inches from the corner bead or the screws on a outlet and a bright blue bolt jumps off my knife. But man if you bump your arm on a drywall corner... woo weeee you can hear the crack as it bites your arm.

I think everything is a trade-off nowadays.
I was just in a house with a 450 sq ft living room, 6 months old Nylon.

Already cornrowing. Customer didn't care, probably due to his "super awesome deluxe Admiral vacuum cleaner with booster jets and beater bar from hell"

Whatever floats your boat.

Id like to add that The reason I have seen carpet wear so quickly and horribly (at least around here) is because of the way it was installed and wrong application for the living environment. Very similar to upholstery cleaning and area rugs.

A lot, I mean a lot of installers do not acclimate the carpet to the room, apply seam sealer, and do not stretch correctly and the wrong weight padding is used.

But I have seen 50 year old carpet that looks 5 years old and 1 month carpet look 50 years old
