Yesterday I stopped at a carwash to dump my waste water between jobs and the owner of the carwash seemed to be upset that I did it. I did not just dump and leave, I put money into it and did a quick power wash of my van after I dumped. When I was done this man that I assume was the owner came over and asked me what I did, I told him that I had to dump out some dirty water and he seemed a little upset. I told him that there was no carpet fibers in the water that I dumped and I showed him the inline filter that I used to advoid that. Why would he be upset? I put money into his carwash as well, all I can think of is that he is having problems with his drains. I have seen other carpet cleaners dump and they leave carpet fibers and debris when they do it.

I only dumped at a carwash once and I asked before I did so. it took a little convincing before they said ok. I think if you offer them somthing in return like carpet chemicals or help them on interiors they can not handle would help out. I used to give slurry to a car wash in return got the van cleaned for free once a week.

I would be very upset also, what you put in $2 for a self serve? You do not know what sewer charges are so how can you possibly judge. Not to mention what the fixed costs are to build a car wash, it is alot more then you think, several six figures

You are not entitled to others peoples property, this is what is really wrong with country people want free and worse feel entitled to free

Shane is being a little harsh (per usual) on this.
I suggest you visit another car wash and obtain permission to dump, in writing, and carry on...

So you would not mind if the local landscaping company dumped grass clipping from the day in your backyard then? because well its just grass and your property was right there, didnt think so

As a former car wash employee, and one of the poor schlubs who had to clean out the pits at both automated and self serve units, I feel that, as always, my two cents are quite a bit more valuable than the moniker assigned to the cliche suggests. The grandfather of my close childhood friend Josh owned carwashes in Noblesville, IN. The automated and one time wildly popular wash was called Car-A-Van (now Car Wash King), and the self serve unit across the street was Port Side. I worked at both.

We were routinely pissed at carpet cleaners and others coming on to private property and evacuating waste. Yes, PRIVATE PROPERTY. I am always amazed at how many people believe that a business is public property. What some of you fail to respect is the fact that for every responsible cleaner, there are 2 or 3 who decide to dump what amounts to sewage--complete with solids--into car wash bays. So to 1st Choice and others, you'll have to forgive these small business owners who are sick of cleaning up after slobs who trespass and dump sludge, fibers, sewage and debris onto their private property, and cannot identify you as one of the good guys or one of the bad guys.

Each bay has it's own recovery pit that fills up quickly. They are 3 or 4 feet deep and have to be dug out by hand on a weekly basis. At the end of that cycle, when you decide to dump your tank on private property and the pit is getting full, it can overflow and flood the entire lot with sewage. Then some zit faced loser has to clean it all up. That means the owner is paying an employee to render service not intended.

As a carpet cleaner, how do you feel when an over zealous customer picks up your wand and starts cleaning when you ran out to the truck to grab something? How do you feel when you have rolled up hose on a job and the client demands you clean under the sofa? Yeah, it's not a huge deal, but it's enough to make your blood boil. That's what you are doing when you dump filthy sewage water on a business owner's private property.

P.S. Give Shane a break. At one time I too thought he was a little harsh, then I figured out he is from NY and then it all made sense. Plus, he's usually right about stuff. He's definitely right on this one.

Partially it is just how i write, half the time i am smiling

but your point is spot on

Also it is just very frustrating to me "guys" are always scamming, mooching, cutting corners etc and then turn around and cry about pricing well... this is why? People work awfully hard and make alot of sacrifices to save the money to make an investment this size and have some guy just come along and think its ok to dump his waste is mind numbing.

If nothing wrong with the water then dump it on your front lawn everyday or buy an autodump system and put it in your laundry sink.

Well presented, gentlemen. Point taken, now here is mine. This forum is to HELP educate men in our profession, which you do not accomplish by insulting them or calling them childish names.
I love this forum and want people to share and learn here, and I think that is the spirit on which it was founded.

We are helping, if you want respect as a professional then you must act like one

Alot of people here are new and have never been in a business setting and do not know what is acceptable, so we tell people what is acceptable and then knuckleheads like you argue with us.It is like why bother sometimes, shheeesh this is really basic stuff

See their is a big difference between thinking it is ok and say in a stressful situation you dump here or there. We have all done it before in middle of a job or day where everything is going wrong but it is not acceptable and that is the difference

Totally agree. Since I do not insult people and I do not call people names, neither of those devices were used in my post. I did make a silly comment about a "zit faced loser", which taken in context, was a reference to myself, as I literally was a zit faced loser at the time of my employ at a carwash. :) Definitely don't miss the teen years. I hoped that by making my post over-the-top it would be obvious most of it was tongue-in-cheek. My apologies if anyone was offended.

Treat the people the way you want to be treated!
it was a good thread.

Exactly

We all make poor decisions in times of extreme stress, i know we have fertilized enough lawns over the years but we learn and try prevent it in future jobs.
