Just got a call for a lady inquiring about upholstery with down/duck feathers in the cushions. She doesn't know the make of the material but sez it is corded.

Any special/extra care to be taken here guys? Anything to watch out for?

Thanks.

No problems with the feathers during or after cleaning other than they are a pain in the balls when you draw them thru the fabric a little with the vacuum and have to pull them all the way through.

One thing to watch for is a fire retardant added to the down . Test your solution first and make sure the fabric isn't turning red or pink . You may notice this even without cleaning .
The upholstery will have this " glow " . If it does ....... Pass . There's no known cure and you could be held responsible . Haven't encountered this yet and I've cleaned several down filled pieces . Test first and observe my friend .
All the Best, Ed

The issue with down and fire retardant is most often on cotton fabric or fabric with a large percentage of cotton. Check inside a cushion and look for any orange / red / yellow or brown blotchy discoloration.

This usually gets worse. Usually gets blamed on the cleaner and usually can not be corrected.

Sometimes you can place the ticking and down feathers in plastic bag or put plastic between the feathers and the fabric to avoid sucking them into the fabric during cleaning.

Thank you for the replies. I just rang her back and she sez the material is dark brown so that has to be a good thing. She also sez her kids have spilled drinks on it with no red or pinkishness coming through as a result. I shall still proceed with first up testing and required caution to not over wet and use ph neutral spray.
