I don't want to be a good cleaner. I want to be great business owner. I know that I can clean anything when I put my attention on it. That's a fact. I need to have the same confidence in my business development skill set. I want a turn key business so that it does not need me to be the hub in the wheel. It needs to work without me.

I want to pick up my kids from school every day and go to the golf course whenever I want and know that my business will not suffer in the least bit.

Building wealth through my cleaning business begins with "pricing for profit" (thanks @shane deubell & @Chuck Violand for giving me the tools to price correctly), becoming efficient within all areas of my business, reinvesting in the business, looking for new growth opportunities, getting my time back and being able to pay myself without hurt my company. Looking for ways to increase cash flow and looking for ways to keep cash in house as long as possible. These steps will start to give breathing room. Designing a savings plan for the business. We save 12.5% of every deposit. This is transferred to a savings account to allow for a rainy day. Let the business pay itself first before everyone else is paid. Aggressively paying down debt when we can. If I can limit the money that leaves my business, I have more capital to use for growth.

It does! I listen to audiobooks incessantly. My supervisor now follows my lead and only listens to audiobooks when in the truck. He has found that others take from him mentally never to add value to his life mentally. So he has to get it from somewhere. I found the same thing happening to me. I had to find a source to add value to me to keep my mind up at the 10,000 foot level instead of allowing life, techs, call backs to pull me back down to earth. I can give people the ability to rise to my level but I cannot and will not drop down to their level.

Education does destroy fear! I read books in the morning, listen to audiobooks while driving, working or doing mindless tasks. And look for ways to invest in myself in all areas (I am guaranteed a return on my investment this way).

Education is what destroys fear.
Wow, I'm gone for less than 48 hours and you guys are proving you don't need Steve Toburen! Between Shane and Barrett you are doing just fine! Some excellent posts above!

Steve,

I still have room to grow.
We all do, Barrett.

Steve

PS I'm teaching the SFS here in Denver for the rest of the week, (You should be here, Barrett. you too, Shane!) But even so I want to keep this going. So what do you kids want to focus our GYB thread on for the rest of the week?

Hey Steve, what if you're in a "renter market" where there are considerably more renters than homeowners. Obviously renters could care less about quality, or your equipment or anything else other than a bottom line cheap, cheap rate. What would you suggest to those cleaners in that market? Obviously upsells are out, high end cleaning is out and probably repeat business from those customers is out

Good question. OK, so WHO is the decision maker in this scenario? Obviously the property manager or home owner. So market to them. How? Just remove their Point of Pain with this simple contract clause HERE you have them insert in their lease. No more ugly confrontations for them and guaranteed future work for you!

Steve

PS HERE are some ideas on selling to property managers.

I absolutely agree, however what I was referring to specifically was the random residential calls from renters. How do you address those calls. Obviously they want something very cheap and could care less about anything other price.

OK, GYB team. As I warned you I am deep in the middle of a sold out SFS here in Denver. And yet I want to keep your GYB momentum up. So HERE is an analysis of running one person versus two person crews on a truck.

Steve

PS For extra credit read and implement this Residential Set-up List HERE. (You need a system for maximum production with 2 people.)

Hey! I give you guys a day off and no one responds! I may just take my toys and go home! :)

At least I have a good excuse. A very full and "exuberant" SFS class in Denver! So what is YOUR excuse for not GYBing your company yesterday? Hmmmmm...?

Steve

PS OK, how about this for Strategic Planning weekend homework?

And for extra credit: How to Hold Your Techs Accountable

I spent the week teaching my helper the last couple things I wanted him to know before starting to turn him loose on commercial jobs. Yesterday was an especially good day, billed $2k. I worked 4 hrs, he worked 10. By next weekend I want to have him have a full day under his belt without me there.

Good to hear, Scott. Congratulations!

Steve

PS Two reminders:

1) Lather-rinse-repeat. One employee gives you problems it is a disaster. When you have 10 employees and one goes astray it is a minor irritation!

2) Now that you are "freed up" how will you spend your time? Too many CC'ers that get off the truck fritter away their new time instead of investing it in consistent GYB efforts.

Steve,

I have come to terms why guys spend time on prespray, blowers and everything technical. It's concrete and gives an immediate return on their time. Everything you are proposing for us/them to do is " in the sky/future." I see the value of it but others may not. I want my time and life back. I am craving balance and return on my past investment of resources. The only way to do that is through systems for all areas of my business, empowering employees and holding them accountable, telling them my vision, finding out their goals and looking good for ways to build efficiency in to our operations.

My #2 has pushed me off of the truck. Glad to have it happen. I have been wandering the past few weeks by letting things distract me. My father passed 3 weeks ago so I can use that as a reason but that is not the truth or how he raised me. I have been finding things to get in the way. One week had a client that need area rugs cleaned in 10 day care centers ($5th week), last week purchased another van and family responsibilities. This week there is no reason not to focus on working on my business not in it. Working in it is so easy but definitely not rewarding.

I have to commit myself to this side of things. I can very easily put the operations hat on and go to work. The business owner hat is proving challenge to find the right fit. It's more about me sitting down and right goals out and setting specific time frames to get things done. I have to focus on getting better at sales, managing, telling my vision, building our brand and becoming a better person, leader and business owner.

That's a great goal. That is the best way to leverage your resources.

When he can run jobs by himself, now you can commit yourself to sales on those days and then hire another tech to keep you off the truck on a daily basis. You become the swing man on big jobs.
