Featured Aloha Dave's Final Days

For this of you who have been around here a while, Dave Moonan, aka Aloha Dave, the owner of Shark, and Dirty Devil Grout brushes. Has been informed that his fight with cancer, which he has been holding at bay for a long time, is now down to a few short weeks. Dave is an ex Vietnam vet and was doing cancer like he did the Viet Cong in Nam.

I'm supposed to meet up with him next week after another surgery. So I thought if any of you would like to say goodbye to him you could say it here or better yet send a letter, note, or a card to which I would be more then honored to deliver to him. I know he'd appreciate it very much. Being the fighter he is, he took the news on the chin, and decided he's going to move back to Hawaii for his final Aloha.

I spoke with Dave (along with his business partner Bill) multiple times over the last few years, and I don't think I've ever heard anyone nuttier, more positive, or more stubborn. Calling him unique doesn't do him justice. He has courage, a very good heart, a wicked sharp sense of humor, and more backbone than any ten people I've ever met. He is missing a brain-mouth filter, but they likely forgot to install it at birth. So I don't hold it against him.

My heart is breaking a bit right now. Cancer is a vicious beast, and for it to be going after someone so full of the joie de vivre is beyond terrible.

Rest assured, he'll be getting some missives from Mama.

That makes me glow inside. I certainly think the world of him, and wish I had a tenth of his guts.

He's the kind of guy that, even if he's doing something dead wrong, he does it with such confidence and vigor that you wind up scratching your head and laughing rather than getting mad.

The world needs more Daves.

This is sad news. Dave has always been a great contributor to this forum and always went out of his way to help someone resolve their issue. Thanks for the address, I’ll be sending a card today. Is that his address or yours Johnny? Thank you sir for the update.

Very sorry to hear this. I saw his name on TMF within the last month and wondered what happened to Aloha Dave. I use his little shark grout brush almost everyday on soil filtration.

I'm going to send a card. What to write/say is going to be difficult. I'm not good at putting words on paper.

I had pleasure of knowing Dave , not in person, but trough numerous PM and emails. He was the reason that I've decided to join TMF. I've never told him that it wasn't just enough for me to read his posts, I had to know him better and get " behind the scenes " look. We both preached laid back Islands life, minus ganja for me. In Dave's posts you could find a lot of practical information, endless jokes and never ending rants, but even when he was flying in the sky, you could've read in between lines and make a sense of whatever he was saying
( sometimes). I assure you that he wouldn't submit to confinement of many rules, particularly " rules" of TMF, which made him somewhat of renegade at times. When he took interest in you, he wouldn't flood you with a generic phrases" how you doing, partner " and such. He would ask direct questions, like what was your life before you joined TMF, what are your interests, what your avatar means, what are your plans, have you been drinking enough beer today to stay hydrated....
I'm gonna be with my family in Kauai in the end of August, beginning of September, so I'll be very close to Dave, while celebrating his life.

I've missed generosity and his off the wall posts. Especially liked the fact he never held back his feelings or opinions. Straight shooter - no BS.
Still using a Grout Brush he gave me years ago (he passed out many of these for free years ago).

It's actually my address. I didn't want to put Aloha Dave's out there. I am supposed to see him after he has one last surgery tomorrow.

Heartbroken that it’s come to this . Aloha treated this “Common Janitor “ with a kindness I’ll never forget . The day I signed the papers to start my business I said “ Thanks Dave “ and the lady accountant looked at me like I’d lost it !! Chuckled and told her he was a friend who always encouraged me and that I vowed I would say thanks . To my knowledge Dave is the only one who ever called me a “ maggot “ !! LOL ! Lord only knows what what going on but it made me laugh !! It’s been an honor , privilege, and pleasure Dave . May you always have beautiful sunrises .

I'm deeply saddened to hear about Dave, this brings back painful memories of watching my father deteriorate and ultimately die of mantle cell lymphoma. We watched him wither way over 9 months last year. His one and only grand child (my daughter) was born in may last year and my dad passed in november. He didn't get much time to spend with her and there was so much life wisdom that left this earth when he left. But above and beyond all else, he taught me to be a man and protect my family. I say that to say this

Dave, you were always quick with humor, sometimes I had to wonder if you were channeling George Carlin that day...I was one of many recipients of your grout brushes, which by the way are awesome, while we weren't best friends and we sure never went swimming together in a fountain...I definitely would say there's no way anyone can meet you and not come away with a experience they will never forget! You will most definitely be missed. Aloha and na ke Akua e hoʻopōmaikaʻi aku
