My brother and I have 120,000+ jobs under our belt together and have been accused of stealing twice. Once on a water damage and the "tea cups" were found because we moved everything in her home twice. The other time was a rental and the neighbor went through the Attic into the adjoining duplex while they were gone and was caught eventually by selling the items at the "nearest local" pawn shop, what a dumbass.

If these were the worst stories I could tell that would be great, but we have walked into a dead body overdose, murders, etc... Be thankful it was just a hundo and credit them!

I cleaned for a man one time and not long after that I get a call from some law enforcement agency. Can't remember who at the moment. I think it was ATF. Anyway, the man had accused me of stealing a firearm out of a bedroom drawer. I had never even seen the pistol in question and told him so. I also told him I had been in business X number of years and never accused of stealing in all those years and would never jeopardize my reputation in my area by stealing anything. I am not against owning guns, but I haven't felt the need to own one for probably 25 years.

Long story short the mans' son had taken the gun. I have only one policy about this and it's called, "Fire the customer!" If someone accuses me of stealing they better have their ducks in a row! It also makes me think of back when I was an employee working nights. Our employer would single a few of us out every once in a while to get a lie detector test for no particular reason. If you failed the test you were instantly fired. I saw several good employees fired over that test and I never thought it a fair practice.

I agree and would hold my ground. If you didnt do it, then why offer 100 back? I dont get it.

Anyway, once in 35+ years I got a call where an old lady accused our tech of taking jewelry - a ring I think. I dropped everything and went over to her house and helped her look for it. I found it.

I think the thing here or in any customer related problem is that it is handled immediately. How exactly is to each his own.

Remarkably I’ve never been accused in 35 years. I say remarkable because people are crazy. I believe people can tell by my demeanor in homes that it’s not in my make up. I’m a worker, not a thief.

Now to your worker. Does he look rough? Has he ever had any felonies? How does he carry himself? Extra amount tats? Missing teeth? Hate ask these questions but many judge others by their looks many times. Most think clean cut well groomed has it together and the opposite not so much.

I would not offer any money back unless you or your tech is guilty. Investigate and explain to your tech your company policy and let him know that you do not think he took it but warn him and advise him on how to avoid situations like that. If a purse was left nearby, I would let the owner know to remove the belonging.

I was accused for scratching the heck out of a wooden floor. I had cleaned her house carpet and a sectional sofa, it had a rug underneath it.
I did a post walk through, showed her the sofa. I cleaned up and got paid.
almost 1 year 3 months later she calls me and leaves a message yelling and ripping me apart. Stating "I know it was YOU!" "Now you need to fix it NOW!"

I called her back and asked her some questions but she wanted nothing except for me to admit to the wrong doing. I tried going over she said no, tomorrow, we agree at 9 am. I arrive and no one opens, i knock, ring the door bell, knock on the window and finally she opens and sees me, she is shocked her ayes almost bulged out! she says I forgot about our appointment. I walk in calm, let her lead me to the area and I video tape everything with 2 videos, 1 camcorder, and cell, take photos with cell and camera, measure and I am in shock to see that the area she accused me of damaging was not near the area i was working. I asked when did this happen? she said the next day after the cleaning. I asked Why wait to report for over 1 year? I do a 1 week post service call and I always call and to do a 1 year service reminder left 2 messages as I have done the past 2 years. she stayed quiet, her attitude was completely different from the phone. Interesting thing is that I showed her that the deep scratches has no oxidation, did not look old and still had some shavings, and I asked again when she noticed this she repeated that it was after I had left and that there was no way that could not have noticed them, I said did you move your furniture around? the layout looks different. she said no. Well I look around and see 2 iron and heavy speaker stands with eagle claw feet not in their usual place. I knew that someone had moved them and when I looked at the feet....The evidence wood shaving still stuck on the claws. I showed her and also showed her that there was even more multiple scratches 3 inches under the rug past the fringes. She got pale, I mean she when to white Caucasian to white as a ghost. I said I dont feel it would be right and fair for me to accept liability for something that clearly can be seen as fresh with shavings and shavings on the speaker stands feet.

She paused and said, no it wasnt you. I really thought it was you, and I saw last time you brought in a huge tool box and layed it on the floor. I was like huh???!?! she repeated " I know it was not you"
I do not know what that lady was trying to do but after she agreed and signs a no fault invoice I left. I spit her out like a fat person does to a vegetable. In other words I cut her as a customer. She never apologized but i was ok with that. 1 month later shes calls and leaves a mess asking to come by to do a cleaning. she did that 5 times, and All of those times I never replied. that was 5 years ago.

He is a decently clean cut guy. Has an eating and a well groomed beard. No trouble with the law and we do a 50nstate background check in all new hires. He is an airforce vet, I am a Marine corps vet. I live by my core values of honor courage and commitment. I most definately will not tolerate a thief. Either way, inwas just wondering what kind of experiences you have all had.

One of the things taught in the restoration classes is this - if a customer accuses you or a tech of stealing from them, IMMEDIATELY call the police.

This does several things.

One, it shows that you take customer grievances seriously and take action on them.

Two, it removes you from the chain of decision-making and keeps you from having to "defend" anyone.

And perhaps most importantly, if the customer knows you and your tech didn't steal, and was trying to get one over on you, then suddenly the stolen goods are "found" before the police arrive.

Whether it's fifty bucks or a Tag Heuer watch, theft is serious and must always be treated seriously, even if you have every faith that your tech is innocent. It's not your call to make whether he is or isn't - that job belongs to the authorities.

Never been accused of theft, but in 5 years now I've been put in situation by female customers of sexual awkwardness.

Most brazen one being a woman who walked in naked bent over and told me to "F$% this P$%^ now

I actually walked out, disconnected the hose from the truck, drove down the street and called the owner. Told him I was not going back in without a police escort.

Another was a woman who would call EVERY month and request me. She kept "spilling coffee" in her bedroom. She would get a little more brazen each time. Finally one time I came in, the lights were off, fireplace was on, and I said to her, "I can't see the stain with the lights off"

She replied, "Really!?" and walked over to the lights in a huff lol. Next time she called I told her I'm no longer doing residential cleanings. Thats when the claws came out and she threatened me with a sexual assault lawsuit. I told her calmly to go right ahead, we both know I never touched her or made an advance. She proceeded to text me after the call a flurry of texts about how "You're not all that" and you act so "Important" and she's done with me lol.

The final one...sheesh; smoking hot, offered me some alcohol because it was Friday night. Told her no thank you, she tried to convince me to relax and live a little.

Finally got her to back off when I started telling her about my wife being pregnant. She at least never threatened me though, if I had been there a few years earlier I might've given in to temptation =(

I've been set up before. Lady hid money under a lamp. Then accused me of stealing it. I simply moved it when i picked up the lamp that was supposed to already have been removed. Beware of these loons.

Lol I don't think of myself as one. I think it's because I'm younger than most men in this industry and ironically I don't "pay" much attention to women. I mean I've serviced thousands of homes in 5 years, having 3 instances actually seems kind of low to me personally from what I've heard other guys have experienced.

I also don't smoke, drink, I dress in uniform for the job and I'm clean looking/smelling.

Who the hell knows. First lady was drunk as hell so count that as you will.

If you are accused of stealing, always have them call the police and report it. You should be there when they call if possible or get a copy of the police report. Mama Fen spelled out the reasons.

I also offer to take a lie detector test and pay for it if they will also do the same and anyone else who was present. If it was a family member but not known to the person you are dealing with, the family member will strongly object.

Over 30+ years our company was accused of stealing 3 times. Twice the item was found but we got no apology and did not continue working for that customer. The third occasion, our tech was guilty. He did have a record for theft but I hired him and gave him a second chance. He had convinced a tech he was working with to help him take a bucket of coins, mostly pennies that had less than $25. He also took a concert Tee-shirt. What a small amount some are willing to risk going back to jail for, especially when he had a good paying job.

No one hardly believes my stories when I was in the field. I had at least 5-10 women a year proposition me for 25 years I cleaned. None less than 8-10's either. It's awkward to say the least. I turned them all down. Glad I did because people are crazy and your word against theirs. The fact that you don't give in makes them want it more I found. However what bothers me most is they all probably think I am gay because I didn't.

Oh my wife and I have played "Good guy carpet cleaner" and "Naughty Naughty Customer".....bad girl.
Yuck. My wife went with me on a redo once because I told her I could not go back to this one woman a second time and be hit on. I knew she didn't want a redo she wanted a second chance. She answered the door with smallest thong bikini possible. Talk about awkward. She was gorgeous but her voice was a bit raspy. My wife could imitate it and I would get so mad when she imitated her. We still laugh about it today. Hard to forget.

I told my wife the drive thru girl at StarBucks was hitting on me all the time. She didn't believe me so I took her with me...

Lol it was hilarious when we pulled up to the window and she gave her a silent stare. Probably coincidence she transferred to a new store a few weeks later.
