Technology is moving forward and in an effort to compile the 10 best developments, machines, chemicals, techniques etc. in the last 10 years, I have made this list. Feel free to add your choices.

1. Water Claw - Finally something capable of removing urine in a thorough manner.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide - The many uses of hydrogen peroxide have made a big difference in our success at removing stains that were once beyond our ability.

3. The Glider - Helps get carpets dry faster and makes a wand so much easier to use. Also makes the older RX20 much more effective.

4. Rotovac 360i - Finally a rotary cleaning machine that is easy to use.

5. LMB2a portable vacuum motors - More power, less electricity - helped build the portables of today into machines capable of equaling the cleaning ability of truckmounts.

6. the internet - No longer are we slaves for the phone book companies and I confess to enjoying the sight of them going bankrupt. Their ruthless behavior is finally seeing justice. The internet has also allowed us to share ideas and knowledge on this beloved forum.

7. Studebaker Airpaths - Sure you need 5 or so in each van but it's still quite a thing to say, "Your carpets will be dry when we leave".

8. Mytee electrical adapter - No small breakthrough for portable users, especially those looking to modify their machines to maximum power.

9. Dodge Sprinter van - Although I am one of the few who have one in this business, it's only a matter of time before more diesel truckmounts are made to support their use in this vastly superior vehicle.

10. Bridgepoint All Solv - A great chemical for removing paint, nail polish etc. Much better than any POG on paint.

Feel free to add your choices to this list.

I'd say that is a pretty good list, Alex. You obviously have put a lot of thought into it. I'm assuming the items are not in any particular order. If they were going to be in order my #1 most powerful development would have to be your #6:

the internet - No longer are we slaves for the phone book companies and I confess to enjoying the sight of them going bankrupt. Their ruthless behavior is finally seeing justice. The internet has also allowed us to share ideas and knowledge on this beloved forum.

Of course, the internet is only going to help you IF you get on board. IF you don't you will be crushed and left behind by your competitors who will finally wake up to the power of dominating your Google local listings. Like it or not Google is here to stay- you can either work with their (constantly changing) rules or you can miss out. (I'm sorry to sound so apocalyptic but this is serious stuff here! :) )

To get you started just download this step-by-step guide that any dummy can follow to immediately improve their local listing:

PS I would also get in touch with Tre or another savvy web developer that KNOWS THIS INDUSTRY and have them not only improve your SEO but also focus on your web site. Traffic means nothing without "conversions" as in booking jobs from your web site.

I'm pretty sure hydrogen peroxide and the internet have been around longer then 10 years

Google has been around a bit more than 10 years but not by much:

From wikipedia:
Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, often dubbed the "Google Guys", while the two were attending Stanford University as Ph.D. candidates. It was first incorporated as a privately held company on September 4, 1998, with its initial public offering to follow on August 19, 2004.

Where was I on August 19, 2004 and why didn't I buy some stock that day? Duh!

PS Oh well, we may have all missed the IPO but it still isn't too late to get on board with Google:

Google is not the Internet. The Internet did just fine without Google, and would without it. There are, and were, other search engines.

But, the Internet was not so popular for looking for businesses 15 years ago. It was not an effective marketing tool, and you couldn't run your business, in most cases, on hoping someone did a search and found you there.

Hydrogen Peroxide has been around since the first star exploded, or really before (hydrogen has been around from the start, oxygen is created from fusion inside of stars, and consequently got to Earth after they exploded), but I don't know enough to say when it's been used widely on carpets.

Some items to consider adding, especially if the view is beyond just carpet cleaning.

Rotary water jet tile & grout cleaning tools suchas as Trubo and SX-12

Directed heat drying for water damaged structures (TES and E-TES and similar)

Improved oxidizing stain removers including one -part products (Stain ZONE and similar)

Natural fiber pads impregnated with diamond abrasives for stone polishing (Spinergy pads, Monkey pads, Viper pads, etc.)

Wordpress which is the easiest Web building platform. Anyone with a little instruction that knows how to use a word processor can get online.

Agreed. In fact, our SFS.https://shop.truckmountforums.com.com site is built on WordPress. It is simple enough that a dummy like me can post and adjust stuff. However, just because someone CAN build their site doesn't mean they SHOULD. Once again, how much can you make out cleaning carpets making money which in turn you use to hire an industry expert (like Tre or others) to do the work better than an untrained person can do.

PS I think it is important to make a distinction between building a business web-site (which in the vast majority of cases I think is much better to sub-contract out) and adding content/maintaining a site which often can be done better and certainly more economically than an outside person.

I think that the wide spread use of internet searches by clients is the number one best development in the carpet cleaning business.

It levels the marketing playing field. For almost no money. So, that any smart cleaner can play with the big boys and beat them by being more inovative and quicker to change.(Corperate think is leaving them behind)

The ease, effectiveness and profit potential of encapsulant cleaning is number 2 in my book.

Tool and chems are just tools and chems.
