Does anyone here use a repelling harness to clean windows?
Seems that most use a waterpole and keep their feet on the ground!

I dont (wont) do any high rise, thus I dont have a need for a harnesses. I have a friend here in the Phoenix area that was doing a 4 story building, using a harness and chair, the rig collapsed and he dropped 40' crushed every bone in his upper body, he will NEVER walk again! His partner on the roof died, trying to stop the rig from going over the side. The saddest part of this story is, It could of been done with a waterfed pole!

Hope you got some major cash for insurance if you plan to hang from the side of a building!

Waterfed pole it is!
Lance - Sorry about your friend his partner.
I have know men who have lost their lives just trying to pay the bills. Paper mills, Shrimp Boats, and making roofing can be dangerous.

I did two jobs this way. At the time I was young and decided I needed to do it to pay the bills. This was a third story cantilevered over a river. So no place to stand on the ground. NOw I see it as a foolish thing to have done since I was not properly prepared or trained to use this equipment.

No one here works on skyscrapers in a large city?
I really did not wish to do this and Scott W is right - this would take Training. And Jason is right about the insurance.

harness is very useful especially if one is cleaning into high areas but I prefer waterpole because it is more safe compared to harness..![]()

Joseph
I did high rise swingstage and chair work. OSHA here in CA dont like the bosun's chair unless there is no other way to clean the window. Two story commercial work is the best, tucker pole and DI water, cant beat it. I used to clean the windows at the old Playboy building on Sunset Blvd. fun job!!

Jason is right about the insurance 15 years ago I was paying over $7k a year with a high deductible, and my workers comp was high too. I lost a $75,000 a year contract because I wouldnt come down on my price. Some joker came in a half my price. About a year later I got a call from an attorney to see if I would be an expert witness for the company who did the stage inspection. The new cleaners dropped the swing stage of the building with someone on it with out a harness. Apparently he died.

Kevin, I am not, nor was I ever (actually 1 time, enough for me) a "high rise" guy... my 1st question would be was there a "10 year certified" anchor? and did they use it?

I googled some high rise window washing stuff. Can't say I would do this for a living; most newer buildings really aren't window washer friendly. Be careful and look into some serious insurance should you go for it.
Good Luck

High rise can be a fun job. Moving the equipment around could b e tough, but the actual work is easy. you dont need to stretch or bend down the glass is right in front of you. Commercial interior window cleaning was a pain except at the PLayboy building. I didnt mind that one too much!

I wore a harness for years. I did construction cleaning, scratch removal and painted frames. I have a lot of experience is this area so feel free to PM me for an specifics.
I sold the WC'ing business last year to a friend. By the time I had sold it, I was water fed pole only for the high stuff since construction had sort of dried up.
High rise work is no more dangerous than driving to work.

For every job you should think about the least risky way to be used. I think working from the safety of the ground is better that anything else.
Cleaning company has twelve years experience in house cleaning service in London and the surrounding areas

I to used to do high rise construction for 14 years..A harnass saved my life after a 5 story fall..Window cleaning gets old VERY FAST..THE GLASS MAGNIFIES THE HEAT AND THE WATER BUCKET PUTS A STRAIN ON YOUR BACK AND bALL$$.I f you have any questions feel free to ask me anytime..A harnass is required 6 foot of the ground..Osha fines. last time i was fined was $14,000

Buildings or skyscrapers are getting taller as we increase our knowledge and anipulatio of technology. There are now many beautiful and soaring buildings that were surely unimaginable in height a few years back. Generally, this platform is very wide allowing teams to work simultaneously. For added safety, the cleaners are also harnessed to the top of the building in case the platform falls off.
Very Risky and life threatening job.
