Hey guys, When it comes to the urine spot/stain as opposed to the smell, what's your recommended way of treating? For spots I tend to use something like TCU or UPS, and when it's gone past spotting into staining I've had good luck with Stain Magic, but when it comes to applying to wool, I wanted to know if there are any little quirks I need to watch for. Thanks, Joseph
I use Stain Magic for wool with the color stabilizer and low heat. Often times urine stains in wool are permnant due to the customer treating it themselves.
Stains in wool can be permanent. So don't make promises. Using a pretreatment product that removes the salts and lipids assures that whatever you afterward will work better. I love Bridgrpoint's TCU Neutralizer. Rinse with water and allow to dry. Spot / Stain removers need to penetrate the fiber. So they work better on dry fibers over fibers that are already full of water. Anything you use has potential for some damage. So, do some testing and inform customer of potential problems. Stain Magic for Wool is fairly safe when used as directed. Other oxidizers work faster but are more risky. Enzymes like Bio-Modifier work slower than Stain Magic but are safer.
If the rug has been chemically washed (most new wool rugs are) - then you need to be VERY careful with stain removing products, or you might create a disaster worse than the stain. Always test. I've seen Stain Magic for wool create big problems on new Chinese wool product - and I have yet to find anything that works on removing urine stains without leaving a different version of the problem behind. You substitute one with the other on wool. Lisa
