If it is still wet it should just go back to normal after an immersion wash, if it has dried like that i doubt it is water/clean water. Colours on Chinese rugs like that are usually safe to wash so i wouldnt worry too much.

Stain appears to have been there for some time. I also believe more than water. Chemspec DFC 105 didn't cut stain at all.
    THANKS

Clean it as you would UPH if you don't have the capability/facility/desire to submersion wash it. If the stain remains, TEST, TEST, TEST mild reducing agents and oxidizers with a q-tip or eye dropper/pipette. Get a release before trying the big guns...

Must be Jim because that does not look like a fading pattern I have ever seen.

I swore it was a water stain also . Till I subbed it out to a company that only cleans rugs (2 nd generation cleaner). Thats where I got "faded" from. I am still learning and not afraid to admit my shortcomings. The rug was returned to client as after cleaning. She was appreciative that I went out of my way in an attempt to solve her problem.
Having said that . I just returned from cleaning 3 rooms in her house.
Also (I meant to take a pic) there was no pattern of a stain on the backing,no stain what so ever.
Maybe Lisa could chime in here.

Looks like pile distortion to me. I've seen this before. I think if it were faded it would not have that weird water like pattern, but rather a "half of the rug is faded and the other half is not" kind of thing like we see around windows and sliding glass doors on installed carpet.

That sure looks like pile reversal to me, I would love to see a pic of this rug from the opposite 180 degrees. I'm betting the light/dark shading will reverse.

    Dusty,
No pic but the pro did turn carpet around 180 degrees for me to see it reversed ! Faded was my term I guess. He did rub his hans across nap to show the change of the sheen.
Pile reversal/distortion could you explain how this happens ?
Carpet was purchased off the net and was cleaned on site by a cleaner prior to me and left to dry in her basement.

    Thanks

I'm betting this rug already had this effect before cleaning. Your Pro was showing you pile reversal. You gotta keep your eye on the shaded area then walk around 180 degrees. If you see a shift from light to dark or dark to light it is a pile reversal problem. Many pile rugs have this issue and the reason it looks light one way is the light is refracting (bouncing off the sides of the fibers) and dark the other way is because the fibers are pointing towards your eyes and you are looking down into the pile, (the light is absorbed)

Reasons why, construction, traffic that lays the pile over in one direction. Some people have even said gravitational pull of the moon.. LOL.

Here is a link to a blog by my office manager where she trys to explain.

Either way, it's still kind of a funny pattern. Most likely not caused by traffic.
