Just trying to figure out why I need it. How long it usually lasts? Should I buy if spare if I found one cheap?

Yes you do need it. How long it lasts depends on how well you take care of it. Buy a spare, no, save your money on something else that you need!!! They are repairable.

theres no such thing as a dumb question! (just reminding myself):AddEmoticons04259:

your CAT PUMP is what produces your high H20 psi / solution that comes out of your pressure hose. with out your pump you cant clean. theres no reason to buy a back up unless you have $$ laying around and dont know what to spend it on, then maybee you could buy a new pump but i still say no.:AddEmoticons0423:

you dont need to buy a new pump unless the housing is cracked or broken but what you might want to invest in would be the seals for that pump

If you find them cheap enough you might as well buy 3 or even better yet get 5, that way you will always have them laying around for when you really need them.
