Vodka will help rid rug of smoke smell
By Reena Nerbas, Times Colonist September 18, 2010 Dear Reena: I hope you can help me out. I have inherited a large oval (10x10) heavy, wool braided rug this year that I grew up with in my family home. My grandmother made two of them in 1956 for my parents' house. When I laid it out in my living room, I became aware of how much odour it has retained, since my mother smoked for 58 years in her home. I never noticed it in her home, since the smoke smell permeated everywhere. It's too big to dry-clean and I'm afraid the colours would run if it got wet. Someone suggested I spray it with vodka to absorb the smells. Have you any suggestions? The braids are thick, the colours rich and I would like it to be usable again in a non-smoker's home. Many thanks for any advice.

    Sincerely, Sherry

Hi Sherry: A professional carpet-cleaning company will advise you on whether the carpet is wettable (my new word of the day). If it is, my first suggestion is to steam-clean the carpet (or have the carpet professionally cleaned) and the second suggestion is to spray the carpet with vodka. Test everything on a small, inconspicuous area first. But nothing will help until the carpet is well-cleaned

Well... actually... alcohol does help remove some odors, usually fragrance (perfume) based - so she must have gotten confused (or wanted to write off the vodka in her house as "work related") =)

Take the smoke smell out and bring on the bar smell. LOL funny stuff there. At least the lady did suggest a professional clean it first. She will probably call one of those $7.95 per room guys.

LOL> the solution for your stinky rugs comes in 12,16 and one liter sizes and is sold under the brand name Absolute!

Seriously, is is so interesting that we as human beings always want solutions to be simple,, 1,2,3, a,b,c, or one size fits all.

this is Kinda like my competition,, Just throw all your rugs in my big expensive paddle tub, pour in some of my secret Nano-juice and Voila, no color bleeding into all the rugs in the load and no urine or worse, cross contamination.
I say, read the fine print on the bottle where it says, (use at your own risk)

for the RugBadger company, we will continue to make rug cleaning simple and inexpensive, and clean rugs one at a time, and insist that you get out to a hands-on, boots-on rug class, BEFORE you ever attempt to do full washing on any rug.

Hmmm... good Franklin County moonshine is cheaper than Hydrocide. Besides spraying it on the rugs, I bet I could sell a lot of "deodorizer" out the back of my truck.

Clean the rug with vinegar and drink the vodka to put up with the vinegar smell.
