I decided to buy a Dodge Nitro as a work truck, this way i can double it as a family truck and take it on the beach fishing with the 4x4. Been driving vans and cubes since i was 17, so just wanted something different anyway....Im going to purchase a new 5x8 or 5x10 trailer to use for all my equipment, since the used one i wanted fell through.

Any of you guys use, or have used a trailer for your equipment? Are there any pro's or con's over a regular work van? or is it basically going to be the same damn thing, function wise?

The only thing I don't like about a trailer is taking the darn thing on and off the hitch.

I bought a brand new 5x10 for $1600, works great, I only wish it had a side door for better access. I pull it with a chevy S10 with out any problems.

I use to help out a guy many years ago that had a trailer mount and they SUCK.. Its like using a portable instead of a TM, sure you can get the job done, but they are more of a hassle dealing with it.

It really depends on where you live. I have used trailer mounts for 20 yrs and they have been fine and have some advantages. But as my area becomes less rural and more urban I am starting to see some drawbacks, like parking. Shorter driveways I am either parking on the street or blocking the street with the tow vehicle because the pickup and trailer are longer then the driveway. Working in downtown environment has very challenging parking in tight places or on sidewalks. I will probably put my next unit in some type of van then I will have the best of both worlds, and can have two systems on big jobs by towing a trailer mounted unit with the van mounted system and really rock out the cleaning.

I don't understand your measurements 10ft long and 4 feet wide:confused: the whole van?

I have considered the Sprinter. The height worries me for tree clearance in some drive ways. How are the sprinters for longevity? Aren't they pretty expensive?

I have a truck mount in a 6X12 trailer, barn doors back and a side door, shelving, plenty of room, if you have a truck mount you might need atleast 6x12, where I live a trailer poses no problems, for hooking up there is a steel V shape guide you can get to set just behind the ball, so you just back up and it guides the trailer onto the ball, then simply pick up the v plate and toss in the truck...also you might do damage to the truck tranny if it doesnt have a tow package

The sprinter is 6 feet and height here in canada they want for 150000'm for 15000 cad which is cheap sense diesel engines they break in about the 150000 did I also forget to tell you 3 years warranty also nation wide :). Diesel will burn last which help with making more money to profit I have 2 kids I would put in a custom bench then put a steel wall behind it and wella no more van and trailer and also throw a dvd tv in there

OMG so many replies. i was gonna jump on this. I will anyways cause I have as you can see a 6x12 wells cargo single axle. Very good brand BTW. 12 years old now... pros - like you said drop it off and got to the beach. but get a big enough trailer so you won't have a bunch of crap in the truck to. Single axle will bounce everything in your trailer that isn't bolted down. I can't stress that enough. You can set everything up nice and pretty then drive 20 miles, jump it a few time and open doors and looks like a gorilla was turned loose in there. But seriously you can break some expensive tools if you don't take care.
I am on the verge of installing monroe trailer shocks, they are highly recommended by members on here. So I am gonna give them a try.
Next trailer I buy though will be tandom axle. 6x14 v-nose. diamond plate front.
Check tires on used one cause they are about 135 with tax and all ,a piece for good ones. measure your machine or equipment, and go through the different ways you can lay it out on paper. better to have weight over axles as much as possible. and shelves must be up front. thats where there's less bounce. I had one behind axles and gallon jug would bounce out no matter what i did. recently installed new one bolted to the front wall. So far so good.
They are pretty good for advertising kinda like a box truck better than a van IMHO. Keep your axles greased. use strong degreaser mixed about half and half to clean. dont buy that black steak cleaner to expensive. just spray with pump up brush lightly and rinse. If you let it go to long you can hit it with a little bleach mix. after cleaning rinse it also.
If you find one with a bad floor, but everything else is ok. I have a easy solution for that . let me know.
And one more thing. I got tired of taking it of and on to so I got a 12v electric jack. they use them on rv's. got a factory refurbish for about $100 . I keep a descent jump box in the back hatch anyways and I just pop the hatch and clamp negative to bolt on frame and positive to the little wire that came on the jack. I keep a half center block handy where I park so I don't have to pull pin on leg. One of the best investments I've made.

Hope you like my comments, it's all I can think of at the moment. Got any questions let me know.

I seen a sprinter on ebay set up like that with the little room behind the front seats. With the couch bench and tv on the wall. Is that where you got the idea? That would be a cool van for long hauls out of town jobs for the one whos not driving. So your saying that what space is left after you add the wall? Still a large upfront investment. when you can hook a $3k trailer to your truck you already own and go to work.

Oh I forgot , Load leveling coil over shocks on back. bout $120 for the pair at orielly's auto parts of any of the other store I'm sure. The springs over the shocks hold like 1200 pounds. keeps your back end up and will save you on gas and will last longer than reg shocks. You have a 4 wheel drive so it may not be an issue but just pay attention how low your back end drops when you hook up. you wanna be level and not to bouncy. So if this problem arises you'll have that nugget in your pocket. expect 12-14 MPG at best on gas engines. I have 318 durango.

or you get the smaller one and dont put no bench seat in..... still i seen 3 styles small medium and large they even carry cube vans i drive a van right now and with my trailer full i spend about 60.00 every 3 days i talked to a few dodge sprinter uses that owns them said they love them because they get close to 2 weeks before with gas they would burn it off in couple of days!

3 years with an 5 by 8 trailer ...my 2cts
Side door with any must IMO.
Double Axle an plus but not necessary. Securing your equipment and supplies as stated.
Wheel attached to tongue jack and/or trailer dolly very handy to have.
    http://www.cabelas.com/trailer-fend...ype=pla&mr:ad=5855178264&mr:keyword={keyword}
Many 5 ft single axle trailers will fit in most attached garages. (heat for those cold months)
Low cost of maintenance and insurance compared to van etc..
    Pull trailer with everyday vehicle.

PITA ... Short Single axle trailers are harder to back up. Easy to jack knife.
Inner city and apartment complexes parking can be an struggle. Have had to separate trailer from truck for parking on more than one occasion.
That being said I'd take an small box truck over an Sprinter. Most of the used Sprinters with comparable miles are rust buckets ,from what I,ve seen in my area.

I went from a Jeep Grand Cherokee pulling a 6x10 trailer to a Dodge Sprinter with 170 inch wheel base and high roof. It does have some height issues in some areas, but I have not been sorry I made the switch. I can carry all of my tools and equipment and still have room for large area rugs and even furniture to be placed in the open areas. Mine has gone 106,000 miles with no problems. You may find a box truck cheaper, but you will still have the height and width issues.

My old rig got 7-8 mpg, the sprinter gets 17-18mpg. With all of my equipment and water tanks it weighs almost 10,000 lbs, so its not bad. It runs and handles very good as well. I could probably do better on mileage, but I run75-80 mph on the highway. Its a cruiser.

thanks for the replies guys. was only going with a 5x8 single axle, but am going to look into a 5x10/12 2 axle. might as well just buy big now, so ill have the room in a year or two for a TM if i go that way.

Ive driven sprinters before, and they are GREAT trucks. they handle like a dream, and the older sprinters from the early 2000's had throw-you-back-in-the-seat type of power to them, but not so much the newer ones. if they would have some in 4x4 i would have taken it in a second, as much as i dident want another van. Only drawback in when something breaks down, their EXPENSIVE to fix, since everything under the hood is Mercedes, even if it has the dodge tags on it.
