    This comes straight from: SOURCE

Thomas Jordan was born February 14, 1830 at Biddeford, Maine, son of Rishworth and Kezia (Hill) Jordan. In the late 1850s something compelled him to move to Brooklyn and establish a carpet cleaning business. He used steam to clean them, which he clearly was very proud of. In fact he says it is "The Best Carpet Cleaning Machinery In the World," which is saying something.

A Brooklyn Daily Eagle ad in 1872 states that for thoroughness and promptitude JORDAN can beat the world in the line of carpet cleaning."

Thomas Jordan had two patents for carpet-beaters, one in 1869, here; and one here from 1871. His co-inventor on the 1871 patent was brother Waldo Hill Jordan (born November 27, 1834 in Biddeford, Maine). In his ad he calls himself "Proprietor and Patentee." Also note the three-digit telephone number, No. 956, which patrons are urged to call.

And what a splendid ad it is, in the 1888-89 Lain's Brooklyn Directory. Here is a heroic type in a tunic climbing a mountain of some kind, bearing a flag marked "Excelsior." But where is the steam-cleaning equipment? One hopes that he has not left it down at the bottom. It looks rather dark and tangled in the background. Plenty of cleaning-up to do there, no doubt.
