How do I go about finding out how a specific citrus based carpet cleaning solution is formulated? There is not a patent on it.
There are companies that will do that for a price, usually a substantial price. Gas chromotography, titration and so forth are done. The information that must be disclosed with a patent application is one reason many manufacturers prefer to keep their formulations a secret and not patent them.
Thanks Scott, do you have a name of a company that you could recommend to do this? I thought that companies had to disclose what was in their solutions on the safety sheet. Thanks again Pete
Companies are required to list most hazardous ingredients. But there are several exceptions. Ingredients that are not considered hazardous do not have to be listed. Ingredients that make up 1% or less do not always have to be listed. (For some raw materials the threshold lowers to is only .1%) The manufacturer can request that his formula be listed as Proprietary or a trade secret and usually gets permission not to list the ingredients. Sorry, I don't have a lab to suggest to you. Gary Asbury of Professional Testing Labs in Dalton GA, may or may not be able to help. He is the only contact that comes to mind.
