I was doing some mods on my truck yesterday, my wife came to see what I was doing, and pointed to a few rust spots on the roof of my van. I keep my van spotless, I even will take care of the rust on the undercarage, I didnt spend 50K on a van to not have it last, I guess I never looked up at the roof and saw those spots. They were no big deal, light sanding, a little spray paint. Anyway, before I undo everything and pull the carpet up, has anyone ever had a problem with bad rust on the floor under the carpet? I keep all of my cleaners in plastic containers that wont leak, and I do my best not to get water on the carpet.
Rust is not your friend, spotless obviously not I suggest u polish and wax your van every three months!:bigsmiley:
I would recommend you pull back the carpet and apply a product called "Rocker Gard" or "Stone Gard", this is the same coatings that are used on the lower half of the vehicle and then painted over to prevent stone chips. Be sure you get the stuff that says paint able because they make a similar product for the undercarriage that never really drys. It is flexible when dry and goes on with a rough texture. It is available at any auto parts supplier in aerosol cans, about $30-40 and you can spray your whole bed area, the reason why i like this is because it tends to seal seams where water generally gets trapped, the open area's are not likely to give you trouble nearly as much as seams where it is doubled walled. This will also reduce road noise. This is the cheap option or you can spend a little more and have a spray in box liner professionally applied. I will warn you the vapors from these products are much more harsh then spray paint, (I blacked out from them once!) I highly recommend a respirator and lots of ventilation. And yes I have seen vans rust under the carpet before, normally it is not a problem area but it certainly won't hurt to seal it up and as I said it will kill some road noise.
