I had a friend of 15 years , he is even a retired cop. He was working for me the last two months and I gave him 30 % of the jobs. The hour reader was not matching with the jobs I gave him.. I got suspecious and had a female call his cell phone asking for carpet cleaning ...

He never told me about it He said he would give her 10 bucks off if she paid cash. She asked for a business card he said " the cards have the old number just give out my cell phone , it will be the new number "
He did the job and charged here 150.00 , she paid in cash.... I never saw the money or was told of this job by tyhis old friend..

Is this real common ?? I am going to confront him tonight

I wonder how many jobs he did with out telling me .

When I hired him his wife hugged me and said wow this is what he needed ...

    Pissed in Ohio !

Had a friend is right, yes I would definately ask him about it and let him know that you know what he did. Then, this is just me. Let him go. A true friend would never do that. Sorry, might sound cold, but it will happen again somehow somewhere

Just about the saddest words in the English language.

I believe it was Mark Twain who famously said, "The difference between a starving dog and a starving man is that after you feed him the dog normally will not bite you."

PS For the rest of you with employees I hope you are paying attention. When you lose control you are just inviting your workers to take advantage of you. (I'm not defending this abuse.) In SFS I call this part of the program: "Good Fences Make Good Neighbors".

If you can't make it to SFS (or even if you have) I urge you to download this Special Report: "Adding Employee Accountability to Your Company"

Sad, but it happens, unless you keep a tight reign.

Several years ago, we gave our maintenance people credit cards for supplies.

Talk about a mistake. Not only lost thousands of $$$, but then had to get rid of some otherwise good people.

Yep. This was the true loss. Sadly, many people today are "amoral". They are not wicked- BUT if you present them with the opportunity...

    Steve Toburen
    www.SFS.JonDon.com

PS Remember, I'm not defending amoral behavior. BUT if you as the owner of your company do not gently force your employees to be accountable for their actions then they WILL take advantage of you! Sorry!

Make him give you your share of the jobs he did, take your equipment back, and smack him in the mouth. Short of that, chalk it up to one of life's experiences and call it a day.

Vehicle tracking devices are the only way to go, they will let you know everything your truck is doing.

GPS tracking IS a great tool. BUT it doesn't let you know what is going on INSIDE your jobs.

    Steve Toburen
    www.SFS.JonDon.com

PS Single best "employee accountability" thing we ever did is institute a "Secret Home Owner" program All employees knew at least once per year they were going to get graded by a Mystery Shopper. When I would announce at our weekly staff meetings "One of you got Mystery Shopped last week" you could hear a pin drop in the room! :)

An ex cop. Why did he lose his job? Anyway, the company I worked for had me record my hours in respects to the machine hour ticker. Like Shane mentioned, men are essentially wicked. I have to consciously not rip off my customers. Very hard for me. I am as greedy as anyone of you. Only reason why I don't rip off my customers is because my girls look up to me and think I am the best. My 5 yr old thanks God for me. :)

You could run things a lot tighter, keeping the truck at your house at the end of the day, giving him only the jobs you booked for him to do and waiting for the invoices and payments at the end of the day. But since he has already taken the road of a criminal, he will only find another way to rip you off and take your money. It's a shame to see an ex cop end up no different than the people he arrested for years.

Use tighter measures with the next one and dont hire anyone that doesnt hand in a clean criminal abstract and drivers license, BEFORE they work the first job. Dont take promises that they will "get it to you next week" because it will never come.

    Sorry to hear that...

I agree with Steve, gotta make them accountable.

Reward of the business without the responsibility of the business is asking for trouble.
I know I watch my fuel burn or Chem use closer as a owner than just an employee.

I could see a guy doing a small job at night for a friend for some skirt money (not taking a side here) but he was underminding your while operation... Terrible..

Try running a vending business. All cash. Make 8 or 10 stops, skim just a few off each, end of day not a bad take.

Fired one guy, 3 weeks later my route was up $1,200.00! Partly better service, but the skim stopped.

Tell him you know about it, drop his pay to 20% and keep the truck at your house. Let him know that the only way you're keeping him from now on is because of business, not friendship. If he does a good job, that will save you from training someone else. Put the decision in his hands, if he doesn't like the 20% he'll leave. Make him feel guilty, take the guilt out of your hands and make more profit off of him.

I would of never let this happen. I'm in too much control of MY OWN BUSINESS. Sorry to hear about this, with friends like that who needs enemy's. I guess I'm to anal on how MY WORK IS LOOKED AFTER. God what's up with these owner/operaters, letting hired help look after their interest. Just don't understand this logic. I have to keep MY HAND ON THE PULSE AT ALL TIMES. This so called friend would be CHARGED FOR THEFT.......... PERIOD END OF STORY. AGAIN THIS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN TO ME. I have a great HELPER who is paid well, but HE DOES NOT GO OUT SOLO!!!!!!!!! I'm on location FOR EVERY JOB. IF YOU NEED TO CHECK MILEAGE AND MOUNT HOURS YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL OF YOUR COMPANY. I understand multi-truck with EMPOLYEE(S), your going to get THEIFS but COPLEY243 you need to be in better CONTROL OF YOUR BUSINESS.
