I've had yet a few more ruined rug photos sent to me this week from cleaners cleaning rugs in the home, and due to the wrong pH with one, and heat with another, both now own their clients' rugs.

I wrote a post on cleaning rugs in the home. It shares the reasons why this is not recommended. Hopefully, if you are a cleaner, you will get value from this. You may also share the cited article with your own clients to explain why you do not clean rugs in their home (sometimes seeing this in print makes it seem "official").

Regardless... I hope you enjoy it.

    Hi Lisa,
Great article! Very fair and balanced. One little point that occurred to me as I read it was a question; if your customers do not trust you with their rugs what does that say about your reputation. Now obviously I do not mean you in particular but rather cleaners in general. I worked at a high end “Carriage Trade” rug washing business that cleaned rugs for people most American’s have heard of. In all my years in that business both as a customer, friend, and finally working there did the question ever come up. We regularly washed rugs worth well into six figures but the reputation was so strong people trusted. So I respect your article and your advice but I can’t help with all you knowledge in aspects of marketing and reputation management that the problem may be bigger than where to buy a portable pit. That being said I loved the article.
    Best wishes,
    Barry O’Connell

    Thank you Barry.

I find that most consumers, who truly do care about their rugs, don't understand that certain methods of cleaning are bad for natural fiber rugs.

I also find that most carpet cleaners, who truly care about doing good work, also don't understand the damage they can be doing to those natural fiber rugs.

So... it was an article to help educate both groups. And I appreciate you having the time to come "play" with the cleaners and post here. Thank you for reading my article.

    No problem Lisa,
I like what you write even in those rare cases where we see things slightly differently.
As for playing with cleaners it is more than play it is passion. I love rugs in all there aspects. Plus as I learn more and more there is an aspect of business as well. Over the years SpongoBongo has accepted a growing number of clients for whom we offer services in internet marketing and search engine optimization. We don’t compete with big time marketers like you and Joe Polish but we can help companies in the “nuts andf bolts of making the internet and especially Google work for them. So as I participate in the various discussions it helps me understand my customers needs better.

You know of course that we offer a ever expanding free service to help cleaners make more money and very shortly will publish a list of the Best Carpet Cleaners around the country. It will be free to be listed and if it is like our other lists it should help many cleaners be a little more successful at no cost to them. Now that we have over 20,000 real rug and carpet pages in the Google cache it is getting easier and easier to help the good guys. We use our 20,000 pages in over 100 sites to help people find the best dealers, cleaners and restorers.
    Best wishes,
    Barry O’Connell

in house vs in plant ...first of all your can charge more inplant them in home and the cost is justified ..second inplant gives you time to fix any browning or yellowing .. inplant has a higher control over the enviroment 9 out of 10 times producing higher quality imo
