Hi I have a stainless steal heat exchange with 1/4” NPT female threads molded onto the unit There are 4 of theses and 1/4” brass elbow tail fittings screw into this Unfortunately one of them has broken at the thread Leaving a brass barrel (male thread) inside the stainless steel female thread To make it more difficult I think the thread is tapped Have put a file inside and filed what brass I can off and now I cant file anymore as I think I’m at the core of the thread Have tried turning it with a screw driver and hammer and no joy have heated it up with blow torch tried again and no joy Anyone advice me on my next step And no I don’t have a 1/4 BSP tap
JB, The easy-outs already mentioned are primarily for bolts. They are tapered, and as you turn them they screw deeper and deeper into the hole. If you use one on a pipe fitting, it can expand the fitting until it splits (ask me how I know this... ). Much better is to use a remover made for pipes, like these made by Ridgid: http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(h2jgtqvthhkuvszc2l4q5j55)/ProductDetails.aspx?SKU=1000004508 They have straight sides and won't split the fitting. I hate to give away my secrets, but here is one of them: Use Kroil: http://www.kanolabs.com/google/ This stuff is pure magic for loosening rusted, corroded, stubborn fasteners and such. It has never failed me.
