I went to check out a van today, it's a 2k5 Chevy Express 1500 with 168k. Everything seemed to check out fine, however, the two problems I found were

    1. CEL is on, I'm planning on taking it to a mechanic tomorrow to see what the CEL means before I buy it.

    2. I noticed a water drip coming from the exhaust side of the muffler itself.

I was just wondering if any of you chevy express guys knew if there was an issue w/the mufflers or if anyone has experienced this problem.

The drip started once the van was shut off(after a test drive). Could it be the muffler might have a small crack and some condensation is coming out?

Don't want to drop $4k on this vehicle w/o having an idea of whats going on.

    thanks

CEL is check engine light. Water dripping is normal, its condensation.

    Ara,

I'm referring to the ACTUAL muffler, not the exhaust pipe past the muffler.

I'm going to have autozone run a diagnostic test on the van to see what codes the CEL might be having.

    Hopefully it's nun too serious. It's a 2k6 1500 Express w/168k for $4k.

If it has a leak you should be able to hear/see it. let the truck run and carefully move your hand around the outside. If you feel puffs of air coming from anywhere on the muffler, you've got a leak. Also look for black "soot" around all the joints. Shouldn't be but $40 or so to fix at a muffler shop, unless you need a whole new muffler. Even then you're only talking $100-200

Yeah, I definitely saw some black "soot" on the muffler itself, I'm not too concerned about it, I figure a muffler shop can put a quick weld on it. My major concern was the CEL, I didn't get a chance to check it out today, but the guy selling it said he had his mechanic check it out and his mechanic said it's an oxygen sensor. He also dropped the price to $3700.

Van is in pretty good condition, has some small holes on the side doors and back doors from some sort of pad locking system, but, couldn't find any other problems.

I might have to jump on this deal, although there's nothing major wrong w/my current van, it does have 256,500 miles, the ac compressor is gone, the heat doesn't work and there might be an issue coming from the brakes. Other than that, the van is solid, I just wouldn't mind having something newer and with less mileage.

    Decisions...
