When I hit the key my starter will not engage. If I jumper the posts on the solenoid it will turn over and start.
Could it be the key switch or the solenoid that is bad?

When you turn the key do you hear a clicking sound? The sound should be one single click. If you here one click the solenoid on the starter is bad.

No sound at all. But if I jumper the big posts it cranks.
Well, anyways I have a new solenoid here to put on in the morning.

Well, I put the new solenoid on and it still won't crank without jumping the posts.

Why have you gone and got a new solinoid when you wear told and worked out the solonoid was not a fault
Its quite clear that your problem lies between the solonoid and the ignition switch
