Anyone here take the IICRC upholstery class? I'd really like some knowledge on cleaning some of the finer fabrics out there and am looking for any opinions on the IICRC course, or any other course/manuals, etc. that could be helpful.

The IICRC includes what must be taught in the class as a minimum. It is up to the instructor how the class is taught and what additional information may be included. If you have a choice, ask about the instructor.

There are different styles of learning, so just becuase someone says a particular insturctor is great, doesn't mean you will have the same opinion. Find out a bit about how they teach the class.

It may be worth traveling a bit if you don't have a choice of instructor near home.

Thanks, Scott. I've had Doug H. for CCT, Bill G. for SMC, and Barry C. for WDR, all at my local interlink. All three had different teaching styles, that's for sure! I'm looking for some hands on stuff along with the bookwork part of it. I'd travel for the right course, no problem!

Steve Andrews would be a great instructor for upholstery and allowing lots of hand-on work.

Steve has a mini class in Columbus OH next month that will cinlude some upholstery. But the next full upholstery classes I see on his schedule is at Interlink in Tempe / Pheonix October 9 & 10. Maybe a good time for a vacation to a warm climate.

    Ted,

I don't currently do water restoration, but I took Barry's class last winter and was blown away! The amount of knowledge that you gain in a few short days is incredible, and Barry truly has a way of connecting with his students. One hell of a guy, IMO!

    Scott,

Thanks for the info. I know Doug H. is doing an uph class in Wayne, MI this fall at Great Lakes Steamway/Interlink Supply, but wasn't sure how much hands on he would offer. I'll check a couple other places here in MI to see if they are hosting an uph. class, or maybe Ohio, Illinois, etc.

Aaron what kind of furniture types are in question? I have yet to come across one that I could not clean. So I'm just curious.
    Thanks Rob.

    Rob,

I'm pretty confident in my uph. cleaning, also. Just really wanted to gain a better understanding of the types of fabrics out there and the best way to clean them. 90% of the furniture I run into is typical lazyboy type fabrics, but love to learn new things and keep up with the times. In 20 years I've only had one sofa bleed, or "croc" on me, and that was 18 or so years ago. I just love to learn, and hands on is the best way. I can ace a book test, but it's not the same as say removing water stains from a white cotton couch.

    Hey Aaron,
I took the upholstery class last year. Very good stuff. I took it at Jon Don in Atlanta. Jeff Cutshall was my instructor and he did a very good job I thought.
    Well worth it.

That's cool. Makes sense now. And as Ken said anything JonDon does is first class imo.
