With the colder weather here now, many have spoken about keeping their vans, trucks and trailers warm in the winter months. If for some reason your cleaning eqpt. does freeze, what steps should be taken after finding you are frozen?? thanks spotman

First thing you do is open your wallet. Cause it's gonna cost ya! :D

What I recommend is thaw it as soon as possible. If it is a van start the van engine and cut on your heater. If it is a porty bring it into your home. A box truck or trailer add space heaters carefully.

One thing we do if it is below freezing when we get to a job we start the truck mount immediately and crack the doors slightly. This keeps heat in and carbon monoxide out. On our box trucks we keep the back door mostly closed to keep heat in.

Remember to watch hoses and especially ball valves. Ball valves can "pop" after being frozen and spray hot water everywhere including on you. If a hose splits watch for black death. Lastly,if a truckmount or porty has been frozen not all problems show up right away. Stress cracks show up many times in the Spring when your busy season returns. So the only true cure is keep all equipment well above freezing in the cold season. Or trust me,you will be opening your wallets. Been there, done that.

Let it thaw slowly if you heat it up tp fast the bass will crack if it already hasn't. And don't pour hot water in it either.
If it around 32 you may be in luck but if it goes below 26 your screwed.
    Good Luck

well if that happens with a porty, u might get lucky ,and have nothing break from freezing but i dout it, if ur one of the lucky ones take the pressure hoses and put them in hot water in a bath tube to unfreeze them, hopefully the rubber fittings inside the pressure hose dident pop out from the insides being frozen, and the porty its self bring in house take a hair dryer to the metal snap on were the pressure ataches, let the hair dryer stay on it for a couple mins, then get a phillipshead screw driver and gently stick it in the pressure snap in and push the pressure release button , it might not push in right away, cause it might still be frozen, but once it goes in water will come out and u should be good to go. try not to let this happen.

bummer if it already froze. i try real hard for it not to happen. i put 2 electric space heaters on 2 seperate circuits. then 2 different battery remote thermostats with base stations inside. if the power goes out for an extended time i will empty out the box and put a propane space heater in there. got 3 large bottles of gas too!

Try to prevent your equipment from freezing. Cover your equipment with a blanket and put a heater or something inside. I put the heater in my trailer when I know the temp will be below 40 to be safe.

Start warming it up and warm it up slowly. Do not turn on the truckmount or portable until you are 100% sure that everything has thawed. Running with ice in the lines can just add to the damage!

I learned what spare parts to keep on hand in case of freezing. That way I could replace them if I needed to and not have to wait a few days for parts and repairs.

let it thaw out with the van heat or use a small heater. NEVER try to start the machine while its frozen, you equiment will surely break. (like your pump). if you have a propane unit and its frozen DONT try to like your heater thing that it will help it thaw off faster because you will end up busting the coil in it. If you hose frezze take them off and put the in your bath tube with hot water, after the be to run water throught it to get all of the black lining out before you clean carpet.
    Way to prevent frezzing:
Put a heat in your van over night facing it toward the pump.
If you stay in a apartment use antifrezze or window washer fuild, run it through you machine till you see it coming out your hose(remember to clean your system once you start cleaning.

The main things that break is your discharge mainifold from you pump and the chemical meter, and the heater if you have a propane unit depending what break it can be pretty costly.

Thanks for the replies guys, just wanted to share with others. After 20 yrs of experience of the cold weather luckily I have not had any freeze ups overnight. I really monitor the temps and sometimes go out and check things every few hour. However I have had a pressure gauge freeze while cleaning. During that time I had the side doors opened only slightly and the gauge still froze. It did eventually go back to a working condition after it thawed out. Has anybody else had any type of freeze ups "while cleaning"??? thanks wayne

I've been holding out with an 8-fin oil filled rad and a small airmover so far. It's -10C here for the past few days and it's been holding a steady 7-8C out there. I'm getting concerned about when it gets colder. Still trying to find a heated garage to rent just to park it in at night but they all want too much money.

    question:

In Nashville, it got down to 9 degrees last night. my temp showed 25 in the truck so i covered the t. mount with canvas and put a space heater closer to the water pump on the bottom. temp went to about 50 while the rest of the truck was around 25 to 30. I hate to see my houses left in the cold. Any thoughts on using a tarp to cover the whole van to somehow insulate it overnight? any thoughts on what do use to insulate the truck? I unfortunately don't have a garage, but hoping santa delivers next Christmas...

No, I fixed it. I used a 10 mil tarp from home depot to cover the entire truck mount and hoses. This created an up-side-down pool of hot air with the same smaller portable. Before putting the tarp in, I covered everthying with canvas for more insulation.

Works well! Stays about 55 in there when my heater is only set to 50.
