I've been working in the carpet cleaning business for many years and I want to save up so I can break off and start my own. My goal is to raise 20,000 or more in three years to be able to buy my equipment cash. Can you guys suggest something I can do on the side that will allow me to put 500 bucks in my pocket each month, the catch is it has to be flexible because I never know when Ill be done with my carpet cleaning schedule. I'm at a loss!

How about cutting $500 a month out of your expenses?

I have a severe problem with cleaning carpets, rugs on the side while currently working for a carpet cleaner. I may be alone in this but it just doesn't feel appropriate.

I would be careful with that...I know what your saying Tron but even if he does it with the best of intentions if it got back to the owner it could be perceived badly and cost him his job...

Start watching eBay for deals on used equipment and go by your local truckmount repair shops and see what kind of used equipment they may have. Let them know that if they have any good used equipment come in to give you a call so you can check it out. I got my entire setup including the van for under $5000. It is not as pretty as a brand new van and truckmount, but it looks pretty good. I just got my van painted a couple weeks ago and am getting some decals made for it now. Now that I am set up and making money the goal is to buy a newer van and get a second truckmount this year which will look better than what I have now and use the van I have now as a backup unit.

I like how you are planning ahead and going in with no debt, I did the same thing and it makes life so much easier not having any payments to worry about.

Start out small and with used equipment and then you can grow into the newer, bigger & better equipment.

Definitely save money with your current job if possible, you could wash windows which is a very easy and inexpensive way to earn the extra cash you need, you could get a good used portable and start building your biz on you days off, etc....

If the company you work for does not do windows you could ask the customers you deal with each day about window washing. Let them know you have a side business doing windows on the weekend and see if you can get them as a customer, then get them set up on a monthly or quarterly cleaning schedule so you can start building repeat business.

Door to door works too as well as aproaching comercial jobs.

Maybe, you can clean windows, that is pretty cheap on initial investment, and you can do it by yourself, and if you get one house per week, in one day you can do between 150 to 200 bucks so in a week just with 1 job a week, don't buy anything, just wait until you get the job, and then run to home depot and buy unger products, and just in the first job you will have some profit and the equipment. on chemicals not even 4 dollars to clean even the biggest mansion. then when you get ready you can clean their carpets.

You can also get a pressure washer and clean driveways and garages.

I use to edit and install website templates like the ones you find at themeforest dot com . Than might help me make a little money each month. I'm trying to come up with stuff that I can do In my spare time, my cc job leaves me unavailable most days so what ever I do it probably will have to be at night.

Sounds like a tough one to save 500 per month. Todds idea sounds good. ( purchase a lees expensive set up ) A local carpet cleaner I know cleaned apartments for a cc company. He got fired and bought a truckmount and van for 8000 he says he's making money now.
