What is a good defoamer to use with a portable CFX? I have a CFX with an auto pump out. When I'm cleaning a carpet with soap residue left in it I get a lot of foaming. The CFX has a small waste tank, so when I add defoamer it works for a short time and then the foaming starts again. I lost a lot of time at a commercial job because I had to keep stopping to ad defoamer to keep the foam out of the vac motors. RotoVac suggested a sponge soaked with defoamer, but that did not seem to last either. Any suggestions?

Chemspec crystal defomer is very good. Also
IMO spread a little over your carpet and a little
in your vacuum hose and you should be fine.
That's what I do and it works.

Using Grease Eraser is a good idea, I use it on most every job and never have foam problems, but that is with a truck mount. You rinse with hot water, would work well with the faucet hook-up. For foaming conditions Chemeister makes Rinse Master, a liquid concentrate; I spray a mix on soapy areas with a trigger sprayer. You could also put it in a pump sprayer, it is made to be put in your rinse solution, though I never put anything in the rinse. I pour it straight onto laundry detergent spills to rinse them out.
So to answer your question, get some Rinse Master to use as a defoamer.

A powder or crystal defoamer would work.. Also use low foam products...

It's not the products that I use that foam, it is what ever is in the carpet before I start. On that commercial job I ended up using just hot water to clean it and I still had to keep stopping to add defoamer. I flushed each area at least 4 times with my 360i, and I was still pulling up foam with my dry strokes. They told me that their old cleaning company would clean the carpets with a dry powder, so I'm guessing that is what I was cleaning out of the fibers.

What crystal defoamer do you recommend? Do you apply it to the carpet?

As Nick was saying Chemspec makes a good one.. And there are others that work as well.. I apply a mixed one on the carpets if I hit a spot someone dumped soap .... I would try a wand on them area's first knock the soap down... then use the 360i..

OH, I feel your pain! Someone dropped a bottle of foaming hand soap and didn't bother telling anyone. Guess who found it with a 360??

One thing that helps is slowing down the 360 - less whipping of foam and keeping the water running full force. If it's really bad, disconnect the vac hose, turn it up to max speed, whip the foam up as much as possible, and scoop up the foam with any available flat surface (box, brute lid, shovel, whatever). Then extract. I was ready to beat someone just didn't know who to beat. Always keep a can of WD-40 around for such parties.

The sponge idea works, I just took it one step further and cut up a few sponges and lightly packed the diffuser and bag with soaked sponges.
