I have done it on cheaper rugs.... But never on a wool or oriental type rug as far as floating. I will lay one a top of a rug.

John, I am still having visions of you and your turbo leaf blower.

I was recently told that the preferred method was to have the air move across the top of the rug. Correct me if I am wrong.

Its a great method when you clean the backs of them. Especially on orientals and wool rugs.

Have to be careful regarding construction, but on most rugs - especially larger ones - floating is fine. We have airmovers that clamp to the end of a rug to blow underneath when we need to - when we are drying rugs face down and running air along the back we use airpaths.

You can apply it because it's easy to clean the back of the rug in that method.. Just be careful in doing that..
