Guys, we picked up something like 20 rugs today from a client, and there are some Edward Field's rugs that we can do well with...but what I'm worried about is the one that seems to be made of deerskin patches. Sewn together, very thin, and the top of rug has hair on each patch and we're unsure how to clean properly. Obviously not thrown in the pit, that's BAD, so dry cleaning of some method will have to be done, but I'd like to see if you guys can provide any tips/tricks? Do not have pictures, but will attempt to post in the next day or two.
Be careful. Wet cleaning can shrink the skin and result in curling and wrinkles. Sometimes they can be cleaned using low mositure upholstery tool if the skin is tacked down in place and dried quickly. But this may not work for all hides. You have to careful about tacking so as not to leave unsightly holes. You can use Host sponges or even talcum powder and brush this through the hair. Then remove with vacuum and or compressed air for a gentle method of cleaning.
I agree with Scott. We clean them with talcum powder or dry compound powder. First secure the skin to a wooden floor, then we spread the compound and leave it for a period of time and dry vac. If at all possible do not get the back of the skin damp, for it may turn brittle and break. www.koshgarianrugcleaners.com
