In general, for wool it is suggested that you do not use a higher pH than necessary. Second, what I feel is most important is the pH of the carpet after cleaning.

It may do a little damage to use a higher pH cleaner (10) and rinse it out after 10 minutes than to use a 9 and then rinse with another alkaline and leave the carpet at 9.

Considerations like buffering and total alkalinity enter into the decision of what is good or not good for wool. This can be a detailed discussion, but if you want to learn more about it, look for earlier posts in this section on pH, buffering and total alkalinity.

If the carpet is not heavily soiled, you should be able to clean it with a product with a pH around 8.5 (Hydro Break for example). Then rinse with End Zone to leave the final condition of the wool mildly acidic.

If the carpet is more highly soiled, you may need to get somewhat more agressive. USe Zone PErfect (9.5 - 10) and then rinse with End Zone.

With any wool carpet cleaning, be sure to do a lot of vacuuming without aggressive brushes. You want to remove all that hidden soil without pulling out any fibers.
