I have a friend who called me up and asked if I could clean his couch. I said sure, no problem. It was a giant 4 cushion couch with a chaise lounge on it. I told him it wouldn't be cheap he said no problem. So I put all my stuff in my truck and show up to his house. After looking at it I told him I would charge him $250.00 Which would normally be 350.00-375.00. He told me it was too much. So then I told him I would drop it down to 200.00. He said that was too much. Then I dropped it down again to 150.00. He said that was too much. So he leaves the room and comes back to tell me he has a company on the line who will do it for $75.00. That made me so mad. I told him theres no way anyone will do it 75 and that they would raise the price once they see the couch. I actually more upset that I had to lug all my stuff over to his house. What does he think I'm gonna do it for free. Thats what he really wanted. Forget that I'm gonna charge what I charge because I know what im doing and I have the equiptment to it.
Then he said he would do it himself. Spray resolve on it and vacuum it out. I told that would work. Hahaha That will ruin his couch for sure. This is guy who doesn't want to spend 150.00 on cleaning his couch but he is will to pay 400.00 for a bag of weed from some drug dealer.

well if he can afford a QP of weed he should be able to afford to get his couch cleaned... but i think $200 is kinda extreme also... thats just IMO...

but then again what is a chase lounge...

When i first started out with a large franchise, i was doing Upholstery only at first. The Company ran a national Advertising campaign 5 seat Lounge (Sofa) which would normally be one by three seater and two by one seaters for a set price.
On arrival i was confronted with two, three seaters and three two seaters.
I rang the Company and they insisted i clean them for the said price, I walked.
My time, experience and running of equipment is worth far more than what they wanted.
So good for you Ara, if it had been a re pay for job he may have done for you previously, that may have been different.
If your going to go broke doing jobs for nothing, you may as well stay at home and drink beer and go broke enjoying yourself.

A chase lounge is like a giant one piece couch to complete a 90degree angle. Almost a like a mini bed attached to the side of the couch.
I don't work for chump change. The Lexus dealer charges 125.00 for an oil change. I'm gonna clean that huge couch for 150.00. Forget it.

You just need to know which friends are worthy of "favors"
example: I have a friend that owns a tow co. We keep it fair, and I NEVER will know when I will need his services  And my rates for exchange are @ full prices. But then again, my friends dont use weed or other recreational's :focus:

If nothing else I charge him for expenses, fuel, chems, ect.

OH you mean a chaise lounge.

I would have done it for $150 for a friend. But hey that's just me. Maybe I can't picture the set but it doesn't sound like it would take more than an hour or two. Am I completely worng?

Although you couldn't give him an exact price without seeing it, if you would have given him a ballpark price, you probably could have avoided lugging all your stuff over to his house. In this case I think you assumed more than the reality of the situation.

Thats about how long it would have taken me. I wouldn't do it for less than $150.00

    I agree with Lance.

But also ask him if he can come to your house and do your laundry, wash dishes, iron your clothes for 4$ an hour.

You gotta eat to ya know..

    Ara,
I feel your pain man. I have a really good friend that had me clean his couch and carpet (that were trashed) and he never even paid me. All I got was supper that he bbq'ed. I let it go. About a year later he says "Yeah it's about time to have the couch and carpets cleaned again." I laughed and said "Well I hope you have some money this time because that work is hard and I need to be paid for it." He changed the subject and we started talking about what ever it was. That was 6 years ago. We are still real good friends but he never brings up cleaning anything anymore.

A lotta people have no idea what it takes to clean a sofa. I would have let a freind or cliant have a good idea of the fee before I got there.

I told him it was going to be cheap around 250.00. He told me it was steep but to come over anyway. I know for a fact his whole plan was to try and bring the price down.
