I personally do not recommend cleaning a area rug on site but was wondering.......

Should you or would you clean their area rug if the customer insisted to just steam clean it right now and thats it?

mine do all the time, I ask what kind of rug is it, where you got it and how much do you think its worth. if its a 150 buck lowes rug i clean it after telling them there might be a better way but it cost more and is done better... but they say clean it.. so i do unless its like a very nice rug...

These days you have to be more willing to work with the customers in order to keep them as customers. I always recommend removing them out and giving the customer the information of why it is best to do so, If they don't want to have it cleaned off site that is there choice . Always remember the customer is not always right but a customer is always a customer.

Never in decades have we had a problem with clients not allowing the rug to be washed in-plant. We simply don't give them the option.

We wash all of them - including the cheap Pier One ones - in our plant, and all for the same price. Synthetic and natural fibers in our shop are given the same bath.

That's how we've done it ... and we get $4 a sq ft for olefin. They may have got the rug for cheap because labor cost was next to nothing (even hand made rugs today are low overseas rates) - but our labor here, with legal employees, stays the same whether the rug is a cheap one or an investment grade one.

This is a packaging and marketing issue. And often it is the cheaper rugs that create MORE problems for you, because corners were cut in production.

If you are cleaning in the home, you are surface cleaning the rug. You can only get it so wet, you can only rinse so much, you can only run the air movers so much. Removing the rug allows you to give it a more thorough cleaning - especially if you are giving it a bath - and if there are any "problems' you have an opportunity to correct them.

I'm not saying this is the right way to handle it ... I'm simply saying this is what we do, and we get a number of synthetic area rugs we handle the same as hand woven orientals, and we charge the same.
