    Hi guys,
Posted in the Newbie forum earlier just to introduce myself, and have my first question so here it goes!

My brother and I have been talking about starting a CC business for a while and have been searching hi and low for vans/TM's.

Right now we have an opportunity to purchase a Bane-Clene Para-Mount TM (I know, I know) for an awesome price, but I do have a few questions.

The machine only has 575 hours but was bought new in 1996 from Bane-Clene. Bane flew him to Indy for the seminars, etc. I know the guy very well and he is a stand-up, honest guy that decided that carpet cleaning was not for him back then. The machine has been sitting ever since.

So my question to you guys is: Would this be a good start up machine for my brother and I? Is there anything that we should be looking for? The machine will come with everything he has, everything.

This will be mostly a after-hours and weekend machine doing about 50/50 commercial/residential work. We both have regular jobs (for now:biggrin:) so we are just looking to get off the ground for now.

As stated up above, we can possibly take the machine off of his hands for a lot less than a new portable would cost. Would this be a good first machine until we can afford a new TM, or would we be better off just passing on this one?

Please, any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!:lifting:

Carpet cleaning equipment has come a long way since 1996. Don't think of cleaning with this unit as state of the art. There are easier ways to clean. There are faster ways to clean. There are more thorough ways to clean.

With that disclaimer, if the machines still runs well after sitting around that long and if your finances lead you that way, it could be a decent start-up unjit. But don't base your opinion of carpet cleaning on what you can do with the machine.

As an option, I would talk to Central California Cleaning Supply about a lease deal for a new truck mount. CCCS has several locations in central Cal.

I think you buy a truck mount with no clients right now is not a smart decision, I think you need to learn with a portable. You can buy a portable in ebay and then replace the motors with a 3 stage vacuum motors, I saw in ebay a portable for $350 with 2 motors 2 stages parallel you can replace them with a 3 stages and have a really good unit. Buy 2 bucket heater in amazon for $41 dollars each one, and before you move furniture and pre spray and agitate, fill the portable with water and put inside the solution tank the 2 heaters bucket and in 20 minutes you will have almost 200 F water for cleaning.

After you start getting more clients etc etc then you buy your truck mount.
I would like to buy a truck mount but the amount of carpet I clean a week (3 jobs per week $600) won't pay off.

I agree with Scott. It has been sitting a while and do not think i would go any further with it. Do not have any comments on the Bane Clean system because never used one or even seen one. Good Luck!

Not sure of the condition of the internals, water been sitting in there, did it ever freeze while in storage, gaskets/o-rings etc dry out and crack? a lot to consider, maybe a trial run on the machine and see if it what you expect? will he let you try it out on your home or something? that may be your best bet on a machine that has sat for so long...... just some thoughts.......

Thanks for the advice guys! We have checked out the unit, no water has been sitting, everything looks to be clean and in good shape etc... We were talking about him letting us give it a "trial run" in our own homes first and he had no problems with it. I'll let you know how things turn out. Thanks again!

I personally don't like the idea behind a bane clene machine. I think if you're looking at it you might as well look at a real portable and start there....although the bane has the advantage of not having to fill and dump as much so it's a glorified portible. I'd get your business started and learn the ropes. Then get a real TM. You'll be able to increase production greatly and do a better job. Heat and vacuum make a huge difference when cleaning carpet. Cause face it the faster you can get the water to and away from the carpet the better....and of course heat helps.

    CFCS,

Do you suggest we get our business started with the Bane for now? or just pass on this unit and look into real portable's. I guess my real question is, Would this Bane-Clene get us by for now? While we are still learning.

I know the Bane does'nt have the power that TM's have, but that could be a good thing since we are new to the trade. I'm thinking absolute quality for now, even if it takes us twice as long to do a job, or should we just look into a different machine?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to make the right decision the first time and not regret it later on down the road. Thanks again!

As we started out with Bane Truckmounts, I do have a few opinions.

:detective: Do not get it! Even Banes have improved with their equipment since 1996.

I would look at the Savage-1 Electronic Truck Mounts for a simple electric TM that can clean well or a new Judson/Odin special electric unit (still in testing).

Or find a good used Judson TNT.

Oh, just so you don't forget, DO NOT get the Bane, their are much better choices.

How much are you looking to spend? That's probably most important to know for a recommendation. Do you have any credit....cause you can get into a 20 grand TM for around 400 bucks or so a month especially with a downpayment. You could find a used van and buy a judson TNT for pretty cheap and have a very solid performing TM.

Look at Truckmountdeals.com or jondon.com's classified section. With the economy the way it is right now there are deals to be had.

Keep in mind I've never used a bane but the area I clean in used to have only bane machines in it, and what I do amazes almost all my customers.

We were really hoping to buy our first TM and van outright. We never really thought about leasing/financing until today. So I guess it's back to the drawing board for now.

That's the reason I registered here in the first place! to get all this great info, and for people like you guys to point us in the right direction. Thanks again!

    for my two cents
get yourself a judson with a greenhorn wand and 2.5 hose and you will never want for another machine.
and get yourself some judson chems as well

I guess I am flipping to the other side. Pay cash now get the business on the ground floor where you have the income coming in and then finance/borrow to get a decent unit.

So many variable to a young company that going into debt is not good. What if you and your brother cant work side by side on day to day business? What if you or your brother decide carpet cleaning isnt for you/him? Many carpet cleaners started out with a Bane. I remember running them back in the 80's. With the proper technique, chemicals and exp you can clean alot of carpets with them.

Thanks for the reply Smith. We are thinking the same thing, pay cash and the get the business off the ground! We are kind of shying away from the Bane due to some comments from you guys and have decided to start out with a portable and a floor machine (OP) for now.

At this point, we are going to focus on mostly commercial work and do some residential (family + friends) when needed. I have been doing a lot of research and the portable's of today have come a long way since the Bane's of the 90's. Thanks for all your help, and I look forward to posting about our first job!:lifting:

The newer Bane Clene truckmounts are much better than the older ones such as a 96 model.
For instance the old units used the same 1 1/2 HP electric motor to run the solution pump and the sutorbilt 3MP vacuum pump.
Now they direct couple to the same blower so the rpms are 1725 instead of 1500 for the belt driven units. Also they use a 1/3 HP motor to drive the solution pump. The also have an electric heat exchanger after the pump.
The cleaning soluton is preheated in large tanks by both using the immersion heater and by driving the truck to the different jobs.
The relsult is they have quite a bit more vacuum and potentially more heat with steadier pressure. Everything is direct driven so no more belts.
