LOL Gary. Is it actually profitable if someone can learn the skill to do the work, or is it more of a burden, than the money is worth.
It can be quite profitable. It is back, knee, and elbow breaking work. I make more cleaning the stuff than I did installing it. The last 10 years I charged a ton but really only did custom jobs. The problem being, just like with CC and T&G, is that you must compete with the hacks. The big difference is that a tile hack job is not as easily fixed as a CC hack job. So people live with a screwed up floor. So yes you can make money installing, but there is a lot of competition with the hacks and you either have to find a niche, or sell your services very well to get the money you deserve.
Amen I am certified with the WFCA for basic and advanced carpet installation I am certified with NWFA for hardwood flooring installation and sanding and refinishing, I have taken class on laminate, Forbo Lino, I have installed for almost 10 yrs and I have made a lot more money cleaning than installing. But having the knowledge of an installer allows me to pick up lots of work and gives me perspectives that just being a cleaner can give you. So I can sell services more effectively because of it. I've installed tile. I can and have done grout repairs. It's not so bad to fix a grout line here and there but a whole floor is gonna cost. Color sealing is the answer to color problems though. But cracked grout is another story and most likely it will happen again unless you can start over with the installation and use some crack suppresant to protect againts cracks in the subfloor.
Never installed it but the guys that i know have made quite a good living at it. They do always complain about there knees hurting them. One guy said his back hurt him but then he found out it was from his wallet full of money from the jobs.
