I just replaced my alternator on my a12 Nissan. Now for some reason it wont charge I bought the replacement from auto zone it tests fine in the store but when installed on TM it wont charge the battery any one have a similar problem?
Make sure the wires that connect to the alternator are in good shape. Check the wires all the way form the alternator to the other end and make sure the insulation has not rubbed raw anywhere which would ground the alternator and give you no charge. I can't remember if that engine has an external voltage regulator or if the regulator is internal to the alternator, if it is external check or replace that too. The last thing I can think of is the battery actually being bad and not accepting a charge, or possibly a bad connection at the battery, have auto zone test the battery to see.
Jim thanks I might have to. Its getting a charge now but not at full volts its only about 12 when it should be 14. I changed out the light I think that was part of the problem, but still having issues.
Well I thought I had it fixed, now the battery is dying again and killing the fuel pump. I replaced the alternator light on the control panel to a led light could that be the problem should I put in a regular light?
You may have been reading 12 volts because your battery was charged, not because it was partially charging. Now check to see if you have a fuse or fusible link on some of those lines running to alternator. Next when it is running how is the belt is it slipping at all? Where is the voltage regulator? Are there multiple field wires? If so check to make sure you have 12 volts at 1 of them with the ignition turned on.
I believe the voltage regulator is built into the alternator. I was getting 12 volts in idle and a little more with the rpms up but now its dying everything worked fine until I replaced the alternator I've had it checked and they say its fine the light was no good so I replaced it with a led.
Its a mechanical fuel pump so that would not happen. Sounds like your battery is not holding a charge.
Best thing to do is have that battery tested. That charging light has no bearing on whether it runs or not. It may be in the circuit but it does not effect operation. just saying
Hmmm I wish I could help you. I have know clue the set up on that machine. Have you checked the battery that is important, always star with the easiest stuff first. Next whenever I have weird electrical problems I always look at all grounds everywhere, not just the battery ground. Best of luck! Let us know how it goes. Oh and to answer your question I don't know if an led light would make the difference, but I would assume that it very easily could be a problem.
Yes it checks out at between 12 and 13 volts when running. 12 when not, at least when I charge it up and check it out.
