What's Your Longest Hose Run With Your Portable?

I'm curious about this because some have found it hard to believe you can run more than 50' with a portable without a booster.

I have a Mytee M5. It comes with 50' of 1.5" hose. I've run 150' and the carpet was dry in 6 hours. I cleaned at 200psi and I did dry stroke more. Usually two dry strokes for each cleaning stroke and more dry strokes in areas that were bad which required more water.

What's the longest hose run you have made from your portable without a booster? Just your portables as you bought it...and how long did it take the carpet to dry *if* you know (no fans).

    Above All...Be Professional!!! M5 Drive!!!

I really can't answer that cause I always use fans. With that being said, I go 100' all the time with my porty. I will not go any longer than that.......over 100' I will just roll in the unit.

The unofficlal numbers I have seen on the Steam Brite site show very close to a 10% degradation of lift for every 25 feet of 2" hose.

You are using a portable, not a Blower use 25 or 50 feet of hose and do a good job.

The longest vacuum hose run I use on my Steamin Demon is 14 inches. Without a glide on it, it sucks on the carpet so hard I cannot push it forward while contacting the carpet. Yes it is a real sucker.

Remember the longer the vacuum hose the less the suck. There is a direct correlation to suck and how much water you retrieve.

Also the water you retrieve is dirty... With less suction you will pull up less water---dirty water.

I do not agree with anyone who says they can do a good job of sucking up dirty water with 100+ feet of hose from a dual 2 stage or dual 3 stage porty.

    Just My Opinion.

I run up to 140 feet from any water and dump source. I rarely use over 50+15.

    Hello Jason,

Here is a question for you. Please don't take this as offensive. I am trying to make a point that many people do not get.

    Why degrade your performance?

You have an autofeed/apo porty. I am sure you are already carrying 100 feet of garden hose (50 for feed 50 for dump) And you are carrying 150 feet of vacuum hose.

The double garden hose does not take as much space per foot as your vacuum hose does in your vehicle..

Will you agree to these facts?
the longer the vacuum hose the lower the performance of your machine. (approximately 10% per 25 feet)
The longer the garden hose there is no difference in the performance of the machine.
the less vacuum the more dirt and dirty water left in the carpet.

Which will do a better job?

my method---Taking more garden hose and placing the porty at the doorway of the room you are working on with a 25 foot whip.

your method--Taking 150 feet of vacuum hose and putting the machine outside the front door?

    ****
Which will take up less space in your vehicle?
Two more 75 foot rolls of garden hose and only 25 feet of vaccum with my modification to your cleaning style or and additional 125 feet of 2" vacuum hose your style?

    My experience
I have never once come across a situation where I could not reach with 140 feet of garden hose to my Steamin Demon.

PS With my method you will have to add a set of earplugs too.

I also understand that my method will require you to haul your machine up stairs sometimes but nobody said the best results don't come with a price.

    Rick

I hope this was just good food for thought.

I agree 100% Mark. These guys running 150' from the portable carpet extractor are only getting 40% of it's performance if your figures are correct, which I believe they are.
trying to truck mount a portable is rediculous. You get much better result with a low moisture system vs running a porty at 100-150; ft plus 1 hour dry times.

Are you using regular garden hose or do you use the hose that you get from Steamin Demon? SD customer service is top notch.Everytime I call they have one of there tech answer who knows his stuff and will talk all day if you want to.

If guys do run 100-150 ft they better turn the water flow done or they will soak the carpet. Most of the new machines have a water pressure gauge so you can do that and know what pressure you are cleaning at.I would not buy a portable machine that didnt have a water pressure gauge just for this reason.

The OP's question was "What's Your Longest Hose Run With Your Portable"? So, in Jason's defense.....this does not mean he runs it all the time. So IMO...the so called "Portable Police" should chill eh?

No one's trying to make a TM out of a porty but sometimes you make long hose runs to keep from disturbing the custy's home...it's that simple. I'd rather dry stroke a little more than be pushing my machine all thru a house or apt. Normally 50' gets a job done easily and I'd rather run vac hose than water hose where you can have leaks happen.

But get this....machines like the Recoil and the Titan are great concepts for running a porty from a van and hopefully I'll get one like those in the future...it's simply cost effective and they are design to give great water lift from a van.

It was just a question of curiosity. I ran 150' from my M5 once and the carpet dried in less than 6 hours.

Hey its cool, I didn't take it personal and no I didn't run 150 every time. But I would love to see someone try to lift that 140 pound machine up a staircase by their self everyday.

Most of the time I would use 50 to 100 feet at the door. The other reason I would never bring the machine inside is because I used the Little Giant propane Heat dolly system. You cant bring that inside the home or you will kill everyone in their! Didn't want to do that! But I can assure you that my dry times were 4 to 6 hours so I could live with that as did my customers because I am still cleaning for the same ones today. I know that using a shorter hose run will give you better dry times and recovery but I bough the machine for the reason that it could handle long hose runs for when I did need it.

I never once ran my machine from the van it was always at the front door or at the bottom of a stair case for apartments.

Using 2" hose, 100' with auxillary solution and waste tanks, cross american recoil, pre-heated water run thru (2) electric in-line heaters (1 in house), glided rx-20 or rotovac after sufficient CRB will yeild an extrodinary quality job, but I also use fans, and usually come in under 2 hrs. dry with exception to berber. I use to swear by short hose lengths, but have found the extra pre-treatment and possible OP of surfaces produces quality results, exhausts all contaminants outside the home, keeps the extreme volume outside, and isn't a multi corded monster popping breakers (generator in van). With an arsonal of floorcare equipment, the mega porty can be removed easily to allow room for my other portys, burnishers, etc. There are many ways to properly do a job. I do believe I would rather run my galaxy pro porty ( 1-1/2" 30' hose, great dry times) in a home rather than run more than a hundred feet of hose. Probably the easiest way would be a larger heat exchanger TM with electric hose reel and skip all the pre-treat stuff, but I would have to be convinced hands on. And I would have to get a check ready. And get another van. Garage it. Someday. Great thread. 2" hose on monster porty's works well IMHO. MJ

Re: What's Your Longest Hose Run With Your Portable?

Clean Bean do your self a favor spend 120 bucks and get 2 5o ft section of 2 inch . 35% increase in suction. This frank guy is rediculous, Frank go to You tube look up nordic one . it is a Truck mounted unit that runs off 2 3 stages . Not all units need to have a blower. COme to connections in tampa and you run my machine. with out a glide I can pull carpet up from my suction. I have posted avideo here. Do think 15 apartment complex of mine and partners want to have wet carpets , I dont think so . the recoil is a portable or a electric unit that can be run off the van. 9stages of vac and 300 cfm is very powerful. all these the other units mytee, eclipse dont understand the key that the recoil , savage, and nordic one use. sure mytee have strong unit but it could be stronger if they understood what us recoil people noe understand..... Frank pm me so I may expalin in private...........

I don't call our SAVAGE Electric Truckmount a porty, but it does use electric vacuum motors, so, yesterday, we had a mega church to clean.

I ran 170' of 2 " vacuum hose to my 2" 4-jet glided wand. The carpet was dry in 45 minutes (CGD).

I used our new TWIN-FLOW vacuum setup (4 to the door). That setup uses 2 cords.

I'll be back today for more. I'll try 250'.

Sounds cool Bob, look forward to you results. Anyway could we get some more info on your Twin Flow system. Is it just the way you ducted your motors, or is it a stand alone system that we could buy from you and add to any porty?

Re: What's Your Longest Hose Run With Your Portable?

I ran 240' of 2" vacuum hose, with the first 50 feet (in the total distance measurement, both of these 50' hoses were counted as only 50', even though with all the hose connected, there was 290' total of 2" hose being used) being twin 2" vacuum hoses to a Y.

Still great recovery. I could even put the end of the 2" vac cuff on the palm of my hand, and could not shake it off. The airflow was loud also (ATW), so the CFM was right up there too.

Carpet was dry (1 dry stroke) in about the same amount of time as yesterday (CGD). I purposely kept the 240' connected, even though I was pulling back toward the truck, and only disconnected when the hose became a real tangle. ...lol

With a vacuum booster, 300' would work just fine.

Re: What's Your Longest Hose Run With Your Portable?

It seems many of you use your more powerful electric extractors as Porchmounts. The reasons seem to be you are not exhausting in the house with 50 to 100 feet of hose. You are not having to haul your machine up stairs, and your operation is much quieter and does not disrupt the house as much.

The price you pay is less suction, an extra dry stroke needed, a little more hose to move, a longer distance to get water to your porty, a little longer dry times.

I can see the benefit to the custy.

    Signed,
    The Porty Hose Police,

Hey Bob, Can you post some pictures of this new TWIN-FLOW VACUUM set up? It sounds like a great new design. Are going to discontinue the Stainless Steel Savage TM's? Have you came up with a price for this new design?
