    Giving up Smoking

Frank DiGiigno, a Supermoderator on TMF and one hell of a nice guy, is now on day 3 of his life without cigarettes.
Already his wife has refused to work with him.
I gave him my trick i used when i gave up, Nicabate lozengers, i would have one of those first thing in the morning and then throughout the day i would substitute them with extra strong mint candy.
Anyone else have any handy hints that may assist Frank beat the cravings and bring back into his home life, LOL
Well done Frank and remember it really does get a little easier as each day passes.

    Mick

    Re: Giving up Smoking

Congrats Frank, 12 or 13 years here. I use to smoke a pack a day(20 cigs) and then I went to 19 then 18 and so on each day till I was down to 1 then I just did it! I gained 10 or 15 pounds but got rid of that a year or 2 later. I had full on physical withdrawals, nervous, anxious, sweaty etc... but after 6 months to a year I was stoked! Feel so much better and cardio is crazy good! Surf, mountain bike, snowboard, hike, climb etc... you will love it. Good luck

    Re: Giving up Smoking

I smoked at the end almost 2 packs a day. On the 20th year of smoking i decided i was done with it. So I made a date and then stuck to it. HOLY COW what a bad month. On sept 10 will be 5 years hehe.

Congrats on the 3 days so far and the more to come. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done.

Holy cow! But still works out to only 50 cents each. How much would they have to cost to make you quit?

    Re: Giving up Smoking

I am in the same boat Frank.... I started cutting back to every 30 minutes this past Saturday. That takes out a little over a pack a day compared to my normal 2+ packs a day. This coming Saturday I am trying to cut it back even more to every hour. I hope by Sept. 1st to be quit and only using patches or gum.

Good Luck from another 22 year smoker....

    Re: Giving up Smoking

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned electronic cigs. Oh, I think they were banned in Australia - woops.
They give you the nic you need, minus the cost and smell.
The first couple I bought were kind of flaky (it's a new technology) but they are getting better.
The cool thing is there a lot of flavors (I have Snickerdoodle and it rocks) and you can cut the nicotine levels down as you fully quit cigs.
The model I would recommend is called the eGO at domesticvapor.com and the best liquids are from mstsbakery.com
As far as the bans on them, they were available before being FDA approved, so some governments jumped to conclusions and just up and banned them. Big Tobacco has their dirty hands in it too and the govt likes the tax money on cigs.

    Re: Giving up Smoking

Good Job Frank, taking the plunge into the depths of agony is the first step. There are support forums for quitting and that's what I used to motivate me 2 years ago after 28 years hardcore tobacco addict.

There are good boards and bad boards as with anything. I was actually kicked off the first board at www.about.com where the administrator rules with an iron fist and is notorious for banning hundreds of members over the years for little to no reason. I was kicked off that board for making a statement that the physical addiction does not go away after five days.
I received an email from Terry Martin saying I was making statements that were "not factual", then I was banned.

I still managed to quit, but I can tell you now, that depending how deep your addiction was will dictate how long or how intensely you will suffer.

Pretending that you are not going to suffer through this is lying to yourself and your disappointment will be so bad that it will seriously jeapordize your chances for being successful. Accept the fact that this is going to hurt for a long time, and embrace it. Realize that this pain is better than the pain of NOT quitting. Once you truly accept that and embrace the agony, you will be able to quit for life.

Quitting smoking for a seriously addicted smoker is like trying to rip your left arm off. The actual ripping off of the left arm is the easy part. Living the rest of your life without a left arm is the true challenge.
