Thread: Dogs are wonderful?? Crazy Dog Owners

Many years back I would never have agreed that dogs are wonderful. Actually I thought dog lovers were crazy until one day I was driving down interstate 95 and a black fur ball ran across 4 lanes of traffic. I quickly realised it was a puppy and had to hit the brakes to miss him. Fortunately not much traffic on the road so I pulled over. He came right up to me as if he knew me. Seeing as there were no houses for the last hour I knew he was lost or abandoned. Compassion's in my nature so I scooped him up and figured he was thirsty. I'll never forget how he reacted when I put a little soda in a container for him to drink from. He quickly started to lap it up and then stopped, looked at it and barked at it as if he knew that the soda was bad,lol. He must have been no more than several weeks old and was small. When we got him home we picked off maybe 50 ticks,so he must have been running for awhile in the woods. He quickly grew into a stately dog who was loving and obedient. Everyone who met him fell in love with him. To this day I think he knew we saved him. He was very protective if he didn't know you but once introduced to others he was a 75lb loving lap dogs that would not take no for an answer if you stopped petting him. I taught him every trick I could and was amazed at how intelligent he was. I could tell him to go to a certain room and he would go to the right one. He was the perfect dog and deserved a better owner than me since I was a busy business person in retrospect. Nevertheless I loved him and miss him to this day. He lived 13 years and has been gone for one,one that feels like forever. I have a large backyard and I find myself reminded of him nearly every time I go out. I have been around many dogs in my lifetime but this dog was the best dog bar none. As I said earlier in a post I miss him immensely. It was as if I lost a family member when he died. Yes I used to think dog lovers were crazy and I guess they are. But since having Bear in my life I too have become one of those "crazy" dog owners. :-)

Rob, you did loose a family member. Its weird the way they become part of you. I cried like a baby when I put my Rottweiler to sleep, after ten years of unconditional love. I didnt want another dog. I didnt want to go through that whole thing again. My neighbors dogs would come into the house the house to see where he was was long after he was gone. After about five months a kid in the neighborhood was walking a malamute dog by our house and he started to play with the neighbors dogs in our front yard. The kid said he would be back in a minute as he only lived round the corner. He just left the dog there. Apparently he had found the dog 3 days earlier and could not keep it. So he is with us still ten years later.

I agree too like a part of you is gone.. I had few dogs that we lost over the years.. They are like family. Not day goes by I too think of them as I look at the two I have now.. I am sure they knew they was our best friends and big part of our family..

Yeah, I feel your pain guys. We are currently "dogless" but Sioux is agitating for one.

I have a 10y.o. Lab.

I can't imagine life w/o him, I know I don't have much time left with him, but, I sure do appreciate him being my friend.
