I think you'd have to pay a higher commission, but I'm considering a similar arrangement with a non-sexy and non-female type. I was thinking of, for commercial, something like 30-50% of the first job, then 10% residual on subsequent jobs at a location.

So John, did you used to be married before you hired this "sexy young sales girl" to work for you?

PS Sorry guys, it is a good topic that deserves a serious answer. But I need to go for our nightly "exercise walk" with a "sexy, pleasant lady" that I have been married to for 34 years. More later ...

I have a young sales lady straight out of college. I pay her a salary, plus commission and an auto allowance + gas. For maintenance contracts I pay 25% of the 1st month's billing and 10% of each month for 11 months and then 5% on all remaining months. For quarterly contracts I pay 20% first month and 10% 1st year and then 5% thereafter. I pay a flat 5% on all tag work (one time cleans). This is for carpet, tile & grout or marble/stone. I pay her a percent of the profit on all new installation work she sales. Her commission is paid when paid. She is required to bring in a minimum of three proposals a day. She is doing a great job and after about 3 months started paying for herself. If you are willing to make the investment and manage her it will succeed. I think it has been one of my smartest moves I have made in a long time.

how do you do it legaly... do you have to pay workers comp? do you have to pay unempolyment ins? or can you just simply pay commmision only... i might be willing to do 10% at first then up the pay...

Very nice arrangement Jim.I have a young sales lady straight out of college. I pay her a salary, plus commission and an auto allowance + gas. There is nothing wrong with a girl selling for you (sex sells??). As far as pay compensation that is between you and her. The only reservation I have about anyone (male or female) selling, is their knowledge of carpet cleaning. Will they be able to answer the potential customer's questions?? spotman

I could use a paycheck!!I have a young sales lady straight out of college. I pay her a salary, plus commission and an auto allowance + gas. No I do it all legaly...work comp, all taxes, etc. She even has benifits health insurance, vacation, sick pay etc. What you pay isn't important, 10% or 25%, if she isn't selling you won't pay her nor would she stay, but what she or he sales is more than what you are selling on your own, remember I said for this to be successful you would need to manage their directions. Let's take a $1000/month contract that equates to $12,000 annually. You would pay her $250 first month and $100 next 11 months, which would equal to $1,350.00 for $12,000 worth of revenue. Plus the 2nd year 5% month equals $50 x's 12 months = $600 for $12,000 revenue. These numbers are easy for me to embrace.

Sex has nothing to do with it, train your people to meet your expectation, then you want be surprised with their outcome. What questions she can't answer on her own I am only a email (blackberry or iphone) or phone call away. I have also found that many of my customers like to be a mentor and help her thru the process.

My wife controls the ownership and has for 38 years.....I know who runs the show here.

Thanks Rob!

Id put my wife out there if I trusted her...... JK

I would highly encourage you to hire the best character people with strong employment histories and forget about salespeople having to be attractive in order to be successful. It is a total myth. Now grooming, dress, shoes that kind of stuff is important but not hieght, weight, skin color, attractiveness total nonsense.
Have to pay alot more then 10%

Over here, the sales people for the "BIG" cleaning companies ($12million in sales) know VERY LITTLE about carpet cleaning and A LOT about selling.
word has it, only carpet cleaners need to know about carpet cleaning.

I hate to disagree but it has been proven that tall people, better looking people and thinner people are paid better than shorter, plain, chubby people. I am so glad I fall into all those first 3 categories.
Actually it is sometimes referred to as the Warren G Harding effect. He was nominated for President because he looked presidential, certainly not because of his skills.
One more stat: in the U.S. 14.5% of all men are taller than 6 ft. yet 58% of all CEOs are over 6 ft. It gets worse, only 3.9% of men are over 6"2 but a third of CEOs are over that height.
These facts and figures come from Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.

Most social science "studies" are total quackery, you have break down that research more and look at the variables they used.Very subjective and you can pretty much prove anything with data manipulated in right way.
Can only tell you or anyone else thats how i build my team, give me an employee who shows up eveyday and puts the effort in and i will train the rest, you guys can choose to believe in little green men living in trees if you choose.

You know, Shane, I never really thought of Yeadon in exactly those terms but now that you mention it ...

PS "Taller, better looking and thinner"- that really does explain Bill's impressive stature in the industry. I always wondered.

John, I have 2 attractive females that sell for me and they do an excellent job. They can get their foot in the door in some areas that I can not.
