Whatever you do, develop a marketing plan and work it to death. If your sales person can't follow the plan you set in place, who cares what they look like. Give them a trial period, with a system of accountability. Good luck.

Billy Yeadon has some valid points but Shane that right there was classic! Most social science "studies" are total quackery, you have break down that research more and look at the variables they used.Very subjective and you can pretty much prove anything with data manipulated in right way.
Can only tell you or anyone else thats how i build my team, give me an employee who shows up eveyday and puts the effort in and i will train the rest, you guys can choose to believe in little green men living in trees if you choose.

The good looking always win over the plain ugly.

My customer base is mostly women. Without pulling exact numbers I would estimate it to be about 75% of my clients are women. I would further guess that most carpet cleaners run pretty close to that same number. So my question is this. IS a sexy young attractive female still going to increase sales for women clients?
As I was typing this I realized that most of my work currently is residential and commercial work may tend to have more male figures compared to residential work. So my percentage of women clients might be a bit skewed. My question still remains though.

Just my opinion, but I've always found that the more attractive the person, the less they want to work.

Commerical work is mostly males and yes being a clean cut college grad male or female get their foot in the doors better than us old dudes. Besides you know what you have always heard, beauty is only skin deep...............but ugly goes clear to the bone.

Bill is right when you match up 2 people with exactly the same skill level in every category and 1 is more attractive, the attractive person will bring in more business and develop more relationships no doubt.
Problem is that never happens you have to make trade offs and john's original question was should he set out on purpose to hire a young hottie and my answer was no.If applicant has all the other skills and they are hot its just bonus not the foundation you build off.
my very humble opinion

And I totally agree with Shane on this issue.Bill is right when you match up 2 people with exactly the same skill level in every category and 1 is more attractive, the attractive person will bring in more business and develop more relationships no doubt.

"DRIVE" The Surprising truth about what motivates us..... by Daniel Pink
Every once and awhile you see something that is kind of interesting... this is one of
those things! Although it is an hour long, it is "VERY INTERESTING", as it related to
how we should treat the people that work for us and how they want to be treated.
If you have the time, watch the first 30-40 minutes, after that it moves in to Q&A.
Link to talk
I hope that this is not too much Psycho-Babble for the group.... If you want to understand
why people think and do as they do, you'll find this very interesting!

Next your going to tell us to read "The Secret" and attend one those Sweat lodges"DRIVE" The Surprising truth about what motivates us..... by Daniel Pink

Thank you but just like my answer to bill I will keep my research/statistics to peer reviewed research by science and not people trying to move "units"

Darn Shane,
Just when I thought we had reached a common agreement. I think Drive is an awesome book. The basic premise is that money is not the only motivator. I have already written a review of it for our SFS site but it hasn't been posted yet. But so you are not disappointed I did have Dan Pinks last book on the site Whole Brain thinking
http://www.strategiesforsuccess.com/...cleaner-fit-in
I always try and find agreement before signing off. I think The Secret should be kept a secret.
I hope this doesn't mean you aren't going to join us at the next drumming session.

I know, i know their is practical information to be gained from these books and i have read many of them {hell i dont even have cable thats all i do is read}. But the "research" they use does not use the scientific method and go through the peer review process, it is wrapped around whatever theme the book is trying to sell. The goal is to move units and upsell seminars, cds, sweat lodges whatever
Just skip the pseudoscience thats all am saying, the books are fine.

Dan Pink doesn't do any of the testing himself. These are studies done by people who aren't selling anything. You can check out a short presentation on www.ted.com I think you would enjoy him. He is a down to earth kind of guy. I saw him speak in Indy last year.
As an avid reader myself I would love a few of your favorites. I will be glad to send you a list of mine or you can look at our SFS site.

Bill is too modest to actually post his recommended reading list but I'm delighted to sing his praises to the world. I don't know anyone that is better read in this industry than Bill and nobody is smarter except MAYBE Scotty Warrington but Big Billy spells better!
Just go to Bill's marketing blog here:
http://www.strategiesforsuccess.com/...ooks-and-blogs
and then scroll down to his 4-part series on "General Ruminations on Business Reading".
Steve
PS Or for those "self-educated" ones among us (In the final analysis is there any other type of education?) read about Bill's "Personal MBA" here:
http://www.strategiesforsuccess.com/...e-personal-mba

#1 E-myth, it is unbelievable how you can read that book and catch yourself doing the exact things the author describes
Alot of what i read is not that interesting too most sorry, Too Big Too Fail,In Fed we Trust,Smartest Guys in room, The Partnership these are all wall street and big business , but its interesting to me.
