SEO stand for search engine optimization.
This is the Art and I really mean Art, of making your web site show up higher in the
Search Engines-Yahoo, Google, Ask, Dog pile etc. There literally are thousands of them.
Let me start you out with:
1. On site optimization ( OSO) –the workings of your web site –code , pictures, style, navigation, titles, tags, keywords, descriptions, etc.
The workings of your web site need to be smooth; in other words don’t have too many clicks to get to any other page on you site ( 1-2-3 tops)

Now Google is giving more relevance to building LOCAL web cred.
Get listed on local directories, the BBB, get reviews from clients on google, Judy's book, angie's list ect..
Check other Google Local listings and see what citations are showing up listed in their "webpage section" and register your company at those sites or see if you already have a listing.
Get busy now building your LOCAL web cred and get to the top.
It's not just keywords and backlinks anymore.

I think it depends if you are optimizing for your organic page or the local page.
Organic is now getting buried below the local listings.
Soon it will be worse positioning for organinc when Google offers the 4 paid local listing that they are now testing.
Google found a new way for them to get piad on the left side of the page.
That is why I said the build LOCAL web cred. to get on the top of Google Local.
