You want a detergent made for rugs. Don't use Dawn. It contains hand softeners and other ingredients for hand washing dishes that will clean a rug but cause rapid resoiling.

Try Hydro Break.

John - you are nuts to learn how to wet wash rugs on CLIENT's rugs. You can't take comments made in certain posts and believe that this is the only knowledge you need to now suddenly wash rugs.

You want to learn - learn on rugs you have bought at thrift stores, garage sales, or swap meets. Do not - I repeat DO NOT - learn on rugs owned by others.

If you want to begin tapping into the rug market, begin first by finding a plant to subcontract the rugs to, and mark it up to get a piece. Then get rugs to practice on (not clients'), and then when you are comfortable with fiber test, dye test, construction types, all the pre-existing conditions - THEN you can start cleaning them.

There are some rugs that with washing, without proper precautions, you will RUIN. That may be a $100 rug, or a $100,000 rug. Are you really open to taking that risk? You don't even mention what you are using to stabilize the dyes, because Dawn certainly won't do that (and I've never used Dawn ever by the way). No mention of how you plan to remove the water, and your drying system to get the inner most cotton warps and wefts dry (because if you don't that rug will mildew and create a big problem for you.)

Go to an RCT class - learn something. It's not the best class out there (there is no "best") - but it's better than trying to learn rug cleaning from random posts by some who are very knowledgeable, and others who do not know a darn thing about rugs but pretend they do. Anyone telling you truckmount cleaning is thorough cleaning probably learned from that ChemDry video also...

Don't practice on clients' rugs. Find a rug plant.

John - do go take an RCT class. Even though they are big infomercials for the product lines sold by Aaron, and Ruth & Jeff, they do have some good practical info, and offer some hands-on cleaning in pits. Just know you don't need to by the triple margin pits and tools they try to sell you. You can go online and find everything R&J use and buy them directly from the source MUCH cheaper.

Aaron is much more knowledgeable about rugs than the others by the way. But they are an better option than no training at all.
