How to Pick a Business Name

Looking to name a carpet cleaning / cleaning business.

Should the name have what you do in it?
What kind of names sound better, carpet care or carpet cleaning?
Would you pick a name for expansion?
    How about a geographic name?
Should you have a domain spelled like your business name?

How did you pick your business name name?

Re: How to Pick a Business Name

First i would think long term about what kind of company you want to become. If you pick a name carpet related it can, can be harder to offer other services like wood, tile, air duct. Also about commercial work a residential name can sound corny and small time in a commercial setting.

But end of the day it doesnt matter, stanley steemer sounds owner operator name but we all know they are huge. I like last names

Go with Carpet Cleaning. It is a more popular Search term
Would you pick a name for expansion?
    How about a geographic name?
Name of town or area can help with searches.
Should you have a domain spelled like your business name?
Yes, Make it easy for your clients and searching

How did you pick your business name name?
Internet searching needs to be a high criteria.

Years ago names were chosen for Yellow Page placement

Re: How to Pick a Business Name

I'm probably not the best person to comment on this, but maybe my mistakes can be of some help. When I started out in 1987 I had no clue what to name my business, but I had to name it something. I looked in the Yellow Pages to see how other carpet cleaners in the area named their business and found the majority of them were using either their first or last name and simply adding "steam cleaning" or "carpet cleaning", etc. So, not knowing any better, I named mine, "Randy's Steam Cleaning". At least people do tend to remember my first name! I know now that was a pretty lame idea, but I feel pretty stuck with it after 23 years even though I wished I had come up with a cooler name that could better lend itself to branding my business which is something else I had no clue about. I personally think whatever name you choose it should lend itself to creating a brand name that's easily recognizable from your logo to everything you put out including your van wrap and advertising pieces. I personally like the "Grand Rapids Carpet Care" of the ones you mentioned. I also would suggest using Grand Rapids rather than the abbreviation, GR, if you decide to go that route.

I agree with Randy in using Grand Rapids in the name. You can always use the GR in the logo.

Re: How to Pick a Business Name

Use and spell out search terms (type of services + Location)

    It matters tons.

For example: Google "carpet & upholstery cleaning lincoln nebraska"

And see how many times my company comes up on page 1.

360 Kleen could be good with a really cool logo

Grand Rapids Carpet Cleaning or Care is a safe bet, little boring but standard

The word "care" will get less hits.

Re: How to Pick a Business Name

If I could do it again I would name it Raleigh Carpet Cleaning, or if that's taken (likely), just add a word to the beginning: Dan's Raleigh Carpet Cleaning, or anything, the name doesn't matter much. They'll forget it anyway if you don't stay in touch. "carpet cleaning Raleigh" is the most valuable search term here, and it would give me a big boost both for SEO and for my local profile's performance. Everywhere you put your company name, you're already putting in your keywords.

I am with Shane on thinking long term. We thought long and hard about a name that we wanted to grow into and didn't want to limit our potential.

So, How do you clean a hammerhead?(Cymbal sound)

    Not to be flippant.

My points that the more keywords in your name.

The more likely your name will come up in a random search.

Not too many people need their hammerheads cleaned.

    But what do I know?

I dont think i want to choose name based on what may or may not pull in an internet search, google can change in any second and will

Re: How to Pick a Business Name

You two are correct in that "Hammerhead" is a play off of my last name. I did take into consideration on whether or not my name would get any hits from the internet, hence "Cleaning Services" is also part of my company name. When Googled, I am right in the top three companies for my area. My company offers much more than just carpet cleaning and I didn't want to limit the scope of my business by having carpet cleaning in my company name. On a side note, my wife owns a janitorial company and the name is "Mako", so we are known as the cleaning shark company. When your geographical area is on the water and beaches, shark names are very memorable. Thanks for all your input.

Re: How to Pick a Business Name

I was searching on google Cape Coral Fl.

And i couldn't find Hammerhead Cleaning on first page for the terms ; carpet cleaning, cleaning services, carpet cleaner, tile cleaner, upholstery cleaning

That is why I was wondering about your name.

Maybe it is because I'm out of the area or cookies

Can any one else find it with common cleaning search terms in Google Cape Coral Fl. ?

Your map listing could gain a lot of ground with a few client reviews and some more directory listings.
The top listings all have client reviews one has 25 reviews.

Just build it a little at a time.

Re: How to Pick a Business Name

    Good for you,

Even without a webpage you can still get great web presence on Google maps.

To other listing don't seem very "Map" savy.

You have great keywords in your name which will help.

Search this site and you can find numerous tip on how to get listed on top.

Or give me a call and I'll give you some tips.

Your area seem a little saturated with cleaners. But, if you play your cards right you can carve out a niche by not playing the same game as the rest of the cleaners.
