Clean Your Carpets Frequently
Dirt and oily residue on your carpet will attract more dirt. Walking on the dirty areas will wear down the carpet fibers and carpet base. It’s best to vacuum your carpets frequently to remove as much loose dirt as possible. You want to get down into the fibers and pull the dirt out before it becomes firmly embedded.
Remove Stains As Soon As They Occur
The longer a stain is allowed to dry and harden, the more difficult it is to remove. Whether liquid- or oil-based, stains saturate the fibers. They can be cause by dirty shoes in high traffic areas as well as by accidental spills.
Scrape Up Dried Soil
You may have to scrape some stains caused by solid deposits. Soil or dirt can dry into small clumps. Use a blunt metal object that won’t damage your carpet to break up the dried stain. Once it has been loosened, the particles can be vacuumed up.
Spot Test Cleaning Agents and Stain Removers
Not all carpets are made of the same material, and they react differently to different types of chemical cleaners. Always spot test a stain removal agent in a hidden area of the carpet before you apply it to a critical area. Let the test area dry properly before proceeding to use the cleaning agent on the visible area of your carpet.
