I use a trick I learned years ago to make patches, After the patch is cut and put in place with the seaming tape in place I take 6 wet paper towels, place them on top of the patch and press my hot iron on the wet paper towels and patch for 60 seconds. This will loosen the backing to make it fit better as well as the twist of the fibers to make the new carpet patch more closely match the used carpet that is being patched and seems to make the color match as well. It will also transfer the heat to melt the hot melt glue and the patch turns out perfect, after it cools just a bit I brush it with a handy groom carpet comb.
