I got my van into my garage. When I bought this house, I realized that the garage was too short by several inches, so I've been keeping my van outside. This means I have to run heaters to it in the winter, do repairs outside in the cold, and wash it much more frequently. After getting a $400 electric bill this month, I reconsidered how important it is to get it in there.

Yesterday I realized that the main part of the problem is a support beam on the back of the garage door. After removing that, I can get in with just a little scraping. I'll do that for a few days, but I've got a garage door guy coming out next week to see if he can raise it any (it's very close to the ceiling already).

The van has only one problem, a power steering problem that makes it pull to the left when you brake hard. I’ll fix that before I sell it, it just hasn’t bothered me enough to take the time off.

The TM has two problems: the float valve on the freshwater tank does not work, so I have to fill it from the top, and the auto-cutoff on the waste tank does not work (when it failed the machine cut off so I had to bypass it). I fill and empty my water at the end of every day, so neither one has caused me any problems.
My wife twirls a fire baton for the first time since she was in college. How is that relevant to carpet cleaning? Well, kinda tangentially, my wife supports me in the lifestyle to which I've become accustomed so I can clean carpets nearly for free...

Actually, I'm just trying to boost the entertainment value of my blog.

I'm sure my wife would want me to make sure you know that she can twirl two flaming batons at once, but this was her first try in 20 some years.

So I was wondering why I wasn't getting any email the other night, but I didn't worry much about that. Yesterday morning I sat down at the computer and opened Firefox. My website is the home page, so I can see if anything has gone wrong. I got a "cannot find this page" type message. I called Hostgator to see what was going on , and they told me that my domain had expired. "Renew it!" I said, of course. They told me they couldn't, they weren't the people I got it with. It had originally been bought through Melbourne I. So there I am, trying to get my kids ready for school and calling Australia to sort out my website. They told me that it had been moved to Yahoo--I must have done that two years ago. Suddenly I was sorry I blessed Yahoo out for billing me every quarter long after I'd moved my website!

They forgave me, though. I had to renew through Yahoo, or it would take over a week to get my site back up. This way, he said, it would happen in about 24 hours. We're at 20 hours now, and I'm on pins & needles. My website is my main form of advertising, and gets a few search engine hits a day. I had several other websites, but they were all subdomains of this one, and they all had 301 redirects on them anyway, so I have no web presence other than Local Results, which points to my website. At the moment I can't get my email, either.

I guess the lesson I should take from this is to organize my affairs! I have to get everything under Hostgator.

This isn't an excuse anymore--I have been on a mission for the last few months to learn about web development and SEO. Now I have low first-page placement, but with a lot of momentum behind me. The website is an acceptable shell for the time being. My new mission is copywriting! I had hired a freelancer to create some web copy for me, but he has flaked. I've dusted off my English Lit degree and I'm ready to give it a workout. I've had a warmup, as I've been writing a lot for SEO (for example my Raleigh and Wake Forest Carpet Cleaner blog).
January has always been a very light business time for me. It gives me a chance to sit down at a desk and make my plans, which is good. The flaw in this plan is that nobody pays me while I'm doing this. This year I have joined a local barter group. This group allows you to provide and use services not directly traded: I'll receive "scrip" for performing carpet cleaning services in raleigh, and I can use it to purchase services by other providers. There's a 10% commission paid to the barter broker, but in months like these I figure I have the time.

Of course my heating devices were on an extension cord, all coming from one circuit. They overloaded the circuit, who knows when, leaving me with frozen lines again. I'm warming it up now to try to save it.

I can't remember it ever being this cold for this long in NC (teens and 20s at night). It's going to go on for a few more nights, so I'll be babysitting the heaters. I'll try to reach one socket without an extension cord, and I'll run the extension cord to a separate socket on a different circuit.

I noticed that all of the links on mytmf.com are nofollow. This is a little ironic, as I was first alerted to the forum posting with sig strategy by Tre Allen at Howard Partridge's seminar in 2008. So even though my 60 posts with sigs may be wasted, the information Tre passed along was my first exposure to SEO, which is my main advertising focus.
