The areas directly affect must be cleaned and made sanitary.
For odrs that have permeated into other apartments, hallways or other parts of the building, I don;t think you can beat treatment with Vaportek. USe the 3X Industrial cartridge or membrane and the appropriate sized unit.
Let it run through the air handling system for a day. Everything will be OK. No more odors, no safety concerns.

There a lot of good products on the market for the removal and disinfectant of bad odors. The most important thing to remember is that as long as there is source material that is causing the odor, it is impossible to properly and permanently remove the odor. I do use ozone and I also keep a simple bottle of H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) in my kit as a check to make sure I have removed all body fluids that I need to have gone before I set up ozone.

4 days is more than enough time for the gastric juices (sorry to be so graphic) to seem down through the carpet and padding and into the wood. Essentially you have to clean it like a mold job. Remove the carpet, and use a good cleaner to clean the wood. Since the juices are typically acidic, they will seep into the wood. Hydrogen peroxide cleaners will act to penetrate the wood and pull the contamination out, removing the source.
It's like spraying an open septic tank with lysol, yea it'll smell better for about 30 seconds, but you better have a lot of free time and a lot of lysol on hand....
We proudly sell a line of professional grade mold remediation and organic contamination cleaners and preventers.

I got called to a unit a few years ago where a guy had died and he was found 4 days later. I cleaned that carpet 3 times and the manager still wanted me to clean it. Sad part is the guy still had 3 months left for his lease and the Owner of the complex tried to sue his family for the remainder of the contract. What a sleeze ball.
I have no idea how to get the smell of death out of a unit. All I can recomend is total replacement and seal your floors. walls, and hope. That was the nastiest smell I have ever encountered and I will never forget how that smell permeated into my uniform. I still think about that guy sometimes.

Best way is to get rid of everything in the unit and the carpet... Have the ducts clean ,seal the floors and paint...
