I have had a 2 of those. The worst one had massive blood on the carpet and a few creepy maggots crawling around. I try to stay away from those situations and leave it to someone else. Not sure what diseases they could have??? Spotman

Ummmmm?????? Were you supposed to clean an area that had a dead person laying there for over a week? For some reason that sounds like a carpet that needs to GO in the dumpster!

Don't you have to clean it and get the body fluids out before you rip it out anyway? My brother inlaw lay on the floor for days before anyone found him and they riped out carpeting and replaced sub flooring.

I had a situation where a murder / suicide had occurred in a rental home. Was not discovered for about two weeks. By that time bodies had bloated and burst.

The owner wanted the areas where the bodies had lain to be thoroughly cleaned. I told him the carpet and pad needed to be repalced. He asid that was out of his budget for now. PLease, clean it but don't do anything more than the $250 security deposit would cover.

I told him the bill had already passed the $250 level just for doing the site inspection.

we won't take those jobs. leave that to a crime scene cleanup specialist. they are equiped to handle that sort of mess. btw, if im not mistaken, by law, you cannot just rip out carpet and throw it in a dumpster, carpet that has been exposed to what is considered biohazardous waste.

I agree terry, I too do not take those jobs anymore. That was earlier in my career. We do have a specialist not far away. He has all the tech equpt. I've met him. When he has to rip out, everything is bagged and sealed and considered haz-waste and cost $$$ to dispose of. His rates are $500 for the 1st hr and $250/hr after that. spotman

Wow spotman...$500 for the first hour and $250 for every hour after that? Maybe SS should get some of us trained to do that. I'd make a nice little bit of change off of something like that...lol

ding, ding, ding....we have a winner. Law requires that those cleaning up these jobs do it according to the law. If it is a rental, apartment....etc. etc you are in voilation of federal law.

Re: You Know its Gonna be bad when??? custy says ...........

I've been to my fair share of scary bio-hazardous cleanups ranging anywhere from bed bug infestations to a body going undiscovered for 2 weeks. It doesn't matter how dirty or "clean" one of these jobs it is, we treat it all the same. HazMat suits, gloves, masks, disinfectant on everything that could have possibly been affected, 3 mL bags for all contents, and PROPER disposal of anything you throw out. Local laws vary, but you should always check with a disposal in your area on whether or not they will accept bio-hazardous waste.

My first solo water job with my last company... Walk in to do inspection. Water heater ruptured. Sub floor looks like a wavy ocean, smells TERRIBLE.. Person lets me in first, then as I step over the shirts/towels in the floor, informs that's where the body was What??? Wasn't informed of this! Go outside to regroup, helper is puking, boss says to put on an N95 and get to work!! (that is one reason I don't work there any more!) Call insurance adjuster and he says to just cut it out and dry it, even after seeing pics. Tell him it ALL needs to come out. Argue some. Left the maggot infested carpet sample for him to see... did I mention it was 96* outside... LOL. fun times...

Proper prosedure for bio clean up is remove, bag and proper dispose of anything bio hazard. I have never heard of local waste management knowingly taking biohazard, but regulations do very from state to state and county to county. It is noot proper to EVER clean a spot and leave it. If someone were to get hep from that scene you are ultimatly responaible. Besides, why would you ever want that nasty crap in your truck? Anything exposed ids suposed to be decontaminated as well.

Re: You Know its Gonna be bad when??? custy says ...........

Ive done my share of murder scenes, when you have contracts with apartments they look to you to save them the thousands the bio companies charge. I had one a year ago where a guy killed an intruder in his aprtment, shot the guy. I was hired to cut out the pad and the carpet. It was a small area and i was gonna get 500.00 so i was fine with it. 30 minutes of work and a nice pay day. Well im on my hands and knees cutting the carpet and I feel something on the back of my leg. It was a huge rat!!! I jumped up and the rat ran behind the washer. I was freaked out a little, here i was cleaning up blood were a guy had died and a large rat was on my leg. Turned out it was a pet rat that I wound up feeding because the guy who owned it was in shock from killing the guy he had just left and forgot about his rat.
